I can't do this. Plarium still does not care (RANT)
I know some people are going to read this and just see me as hating on the game. But I need to air my grievances once again. I'm not sure which part you found offensive about my initial "plarium literally does not care" post, the comment that the team is made up of fools or the comments about the game. But both of those are what I truly believe. If you are hurt, know that I am too. I feel I've been hurt by this team's foolishness and stubbornness. I feel hurt because I feel like the monetization practices are exploitative. I feel hurt because of how staff have treated the players in the past and seemingly continue to do so. Note that these criticisms of the team are not intended to be personal attacks. Note that when I call out specific members of the team I do not mean to hate or direct hate, and please do not hate on the members of the team I call out here. These call outs are meant to be indicators of team conduct. Team conduct can be dictated by higher ups, as with much of everything else. I have a lot to say, so I'm sorry but this post is going to be long.
This game is hot freaking garbage and I'm tired of pretending it isn't. Communication on plarium/ the whole mech arena team's part sucks too. And it makes it feel like the people making the game care about the people playing it. What's more seeing the attitudes from this community and lack of complaints from other players regarding the communication.
Let's start with the communication, and transparency by extension, since I really want the team to think about their response to this post. I'm tired of complaining about this. Somehow you can never manage to acknowledge my compaints, then when you do acknowledge them you can't promise me you'll do better. Even when you do that, you never let me know how you will. And I don't have an if you do for this one because you don't. We never even get to the point of disclosing how you plan to improve.
I say this every time, but at least when it comes to communication about the matchmaking I've not noticed any improvement whatsoever. Transparency in regards to upcoming content that's actually in the works is alright. But when it comes to matchmaking and things like long desired changes that aren't yet in the workds we don't actually hear a lot. We only ever heard about any other former changes to the game when they were already being finalized and added to the game. Players don't get to discuss with the team at all before a feature gets added. I'm bringing up hytale again but that's because I really enjoy the game and at the same time I feel like their team FROM TOP TO BOTTOM actually ACTUALLY cares about the players.
To explain, Hypixel studio had been keeping quiet about a release of upcoming new content for the game. They wanted the release to be a pleasant surprise. But see this game is in early access and with that and the fact that there was mismanagement of this game and players got strung along in silence before it got ultimately cancelled by the studio (riot) that acquired the initially indie studio and it came out that there was a lot of internal conflict after the acquisition that got hidden from the public, and that some players were uninformed about the games revival being by the once again indipendent hypixel studio, meant that some people felt that they were once again being strung along to be set up for disappointment and they were owed more information.
Now, I tried to inform players that it was okay for them to want to surprise us with a big new content drop since they had already been doing a lot of back and work and trickled in some content with some of the updates they were already putting out. But you know what? Hypixel decided to open up about the big upcoming content release anyways. Hypixel were back under the old ownership and indipendent again. They had been totally transparent with us before the acquisition by riot and they had been quite transparent after. The one thing they were keeping from us was the first "chapter" for the game or its first big content update. And they were visibly doing plenty of work on the back end and for modding support. They had every excuse to keep quiet and they opened up anyways. Mojang who own minecraft, the iprimary nspiration for hytale, is owned by a larger publishing company who is also owned by a larger parent company.
Contrast that with Mech Arena and Plarium, whose team had been argumentative in the past, and whose team had strung us along for years telling us tournament changes were in consideration, with what little they ever said about it until they finally finalized some plans for changes, and whose team in more than 1 case had to be pushed and pushed to get a major friction point changed. I don't feel like you have any excuses to keep so quiet about any of your plans for mech arena because you are still owned by a larger publishing company, and I'm not aware of you having any history actually showing you cared about the players. Them and you bear the RESPONSIBILITY of being FULLY TRANSPARENT with your players about your plans for the game and what's going on in it right now. BUT YOU ARE STILL QUIET ABOUT SO MUCH. Like HOW ARE YOU GOING TO ACTUALLY FIX SP DROPPING BECAUSE YOU KEEP SAYING YOU'RE WORKING ON FIXING IT BUT YOU NEVER SAY HOW AND THE PROBLEM NEVER SEEMS TO TRULY GO AWAY. And WHAT ARE YOU ACTUALLY GOING TO DO TO IMPROVE TRANSPARENCY? WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO STOP TRYING TO PUSH US TO DISCORD WHEN WE COMPLAIN ABOUT COMMUNICATION?
I made this post where I made several complaints here: https://forum.plarium.com/mech-arena/702_game-discussion/1759722_plarium-literally-does-not-care/
I barely got acknowledgment of any of them and got talked over by our forum moderator. I had just described my history with the staff on this team and decided his response should be to police my language and to talk over me. Neat. I can admit the language I used here won't necessarily get me what I want. But that's not exactly the point. I can hardly get what I want from this team anyways, which I still feel is because you've never truly cared. So getting what I want isn't really the point. It's venting my frustration. I don't know how to make you understand how I feel about this in any other way.
And then I complained about several of my complaints not receiving acknowledgement and being talked over. Still only my points about the game got acknowledged, but then I also got talked down to as well. Like I complained about tournament changes taking a long time, and you have night fury here saying "I see you acknowledged some changes were made even though they took a long time for you." What do you mean even though it took a long time for me? This had been a long time for MUCH OF THE COMMUNITY! BECAUSE IT JUST TOOK WAY TOO LONG! AM I WRONG FOR THINKING REPEATED COMMUNITY COMPLAINTS ABOUT SOMETHING FROM THE GAME'S INCEPTION SHOULD RECEIVE SOME KIND OF PRIORITY? You know why it took a long time to me? Because yeah, you did it, finally. BUT IMAGINE HOW MANY PEOPLE DROPPED THE GAME OVER IT IN THE TIME YOU HADN'T UPDATED TOURNAMENTS AND WEREN'T TALKING ABOUT IT. YOU THINK YOU CAN TAKE YOUR SWEET FREAKING TIME WITH THIS CRAP?
This is repeating problem. YOUR TEAM CAN HARDLY EVER ADMIT TO ANY WRONGDOING! When night fury talked over me, he described how supposedly made to give people time to save up and tried to make it seem like my concern was actually not something to be concerned with. He tried gaslighting me, by saying that actually the mech crate rushes are 2 weeks apart so it's fine, while seemingly very deliberaly not acknowledging the weapons. Sorry I fail to see the part where I JUST complained about not being able to get all the mechs. It feels like you guys are trying to argue with me again. I didn't come to the forum to complain to get argued with by the staff. And then when I complained about that talking over me no acknowledgement of the mistake.
And I mean it when I say you're a team of stubborn fools and I'd like to add you're liars too. And power tripping. Every time someone on here complains about the terrible communication on here with the staff, despite the complaints when you do it, EVERY SINGLE FREAKING TIME, one of you comments something to try and push us to discord. We want more active and more detailed communication. Look here at CrystalDrew's comment. https://forum.plarium.com/mech-arena/702_game-discussion/1759848_regarding-mech-arena-forum-staff/ "We can't give more detailed communication on what features are and aren't being worked on or current plans but if you're looking for more frequent interactions with the community team and more active discussions about the game then we recommend joining our discord."FIRST OF ALL THE INTERACTIONS WE WANT TO HAVE WITH THE COMMUNITY MANAGERS CENTERS AROUND QUESTIONS WE HAVE ABOUT THE GAME THAT YOU SUPPOSEDLY CAN'T ANSWER. SECOND OF ALL WHY CAN YOU NOT? GIVE ME ONE GOOD REASON YOU CAN'T! I HAD CRYSTALDREW AND VELOCITY BOTH KEEP TELLING ME THAT YOU'RE GOING TO IMPROVE YOUR TRANSPARENCY BUT NOW YOU'RE TELLING ME YOU CAN'T ACTUALLY SAY MORE ABOUT ANYTHING?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! SO IT SEEMS AS I SUSPECTED YOU'VE BEEN LYING TO US THE ENTIRE TIME! AND THIRD OF ALL WE WEREN'T LOOKING FOR MORE ENGAGEMENT WITH THE PLAYER COMMUNITY. HOW IS THE PLAYER COMMUNITY SUPPOSED TO RESOLVE THE MECH ARENA TEAM'S PROBLEMS WITH THEIR COMMUNICATION?!?!?! And I already know that whatever member of the communication staff is going to either A: Completely ignore my accusation of lying or B: Punish me for ever daring to make the accusation without ever acknowledging the substance of the accusation. We can criticize them apparently, but that's only if we're really nice about it. And don't you dare accuse them of lying. That's actually in the rules. I've been banned for it because this team is authoritative and punishing to any critic deemed to have crossed a line. If my accusation isn't accurate correct me and I'll retract my statement. Don't ban me for saying I've been lied to. That's what it feels like. Is the accusation false? If so, how? It legitimately feels like in this case what you've said and what's truth are incogruent. Can't talk in detail about anything about ongoing work on the game? Okay maybe that's why you haven't done a dev interview in EIGHT MONTHS NOW!
So to sum up the points about communication to make sure each one is understood and responded to:
-You've not once improved your transparency, ever, as far as I can tell
-Other companies are far better examples of transparency than you are, even when they have excuses not to be and your team has no excuse
-Your team is argumentative, historically and perhaps to this day
-You can hardly acknowledge my complaints
-Your team can not admit wrongdoing
-Your team is stubborn and foolish
-Your team lies, tell me I'm wrong don't just silence me for saying that
-Your moderation team power trips and looks for any excuse they can find to silence people on forums and is overly policing of people's tones, language and attitudes
-You don't care
Finally I'll be moving on to my complaints about the game.
Blueprints. It's been near 5 years now since launch. Blueprints dilution already quickly became a concern when you started adding new items to the game. People also quickly noticed you could still get max mechs. Now part of my problem here is as tar suggested we're not getting enough blueprints for new stuff and it isn't helping that max mechs can get blueprints. But that's only part of my problem. Item inflation happens at a rapid rate because each new weapon gets 5 variants at different energy equip levels. You would have to have rapid inflation of blueprints earnable by players as well to realistically keep up. Having the blueprints be specific to mechs and weapons is the problem here. You took 4 and a half years to fix tournaments. Why can't we get more information on this and when can we? Is it gonna take another 4 and a half years to solve the blueprints?
Matchmaking. THE OBVIOUS PROBLEM IS THE POWER RATINGS ON ALL THE ITEMS ARE ALL INACCURATE! I don't know why I need to say this so many times. Somehow the player community has a hard time understanding this. But the performance gap between legendary equipment and other equipment is significantly larger than the power ratings would imply, because the power ratings for equipment didn't change with the stats of the gear and power ratings for new items is based on the old power ratings of legendary equipment that never got its power rating changed. Before the grade update, SP droppers were hardly a problem. But now since after the grade update legendary is so much stronger than other grades even at the same power ratings. Someone with one max upgraded legendary mech and a bunch of puny ones has their max legendary mech in 4000 sp against 4 star rare and epic equipment the gap between those is much bigger than max anything against 4 star anything before the grade update. WHY WON'T THE TEAM ACKNOWLEDGE THIS? WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO FIX IT?
Also BOTS. I tried explaining this I think night fury misinterpreted it or I don't know but I tried explaining that matchmaker operates on a timer that goes 15 or 30 or 80 seconds depending on the game mode, and if it takes say 5 seconds to find a match in any of them THERE SHOULD NOT BE FREAKING BOTS IN MY MATCH. UNLESS IT TAKES THE MAXIMUM OF 15 IN CPC, 30 IN TOURNAMENT AND 5V5 AND 80 IN HANGAR SHOWDOWN, THERE SHOULD NOT BE FREAKING BOTS IN MY MATCH. THIS IS A PVP GAME WITH MOSTLY PVP GAME MODES, I SHOULD BE PLAYING AGAINST REAL PLAYERS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE! I still feel the outcomes of matches are being manipulated by the bots, even though it's getting harder to tell by the match stats until I get killed by something else. And I know you'll give me the "timezones" and blah blah and you "use the bots to make sure the matches get made quickly" or whatever but I thought that's what the freaking time limit was for. And your team has yet to explain to me how shoving a bunch of bots into a match after just 5 seconds of match making reduces server load, as according to night fury.
That brings me to my next topic. NO MATCH REPLAYS. I have time and time again seen ally bots dilly dallying and running towards the back of our spawn contributing nothing to the match unless I stare directly at them a few seconds. I want to know what goes on with the bots in the matches when I'm not looking at them. I'd also like to seek ways to improve my performance in the matches and the lack of replays makes that much tougher. The lack of multi-perspective match replays for this long is perplexing.
Tournaments. The big problem with tournaments is players dropping 1 rank every season. So I guess if I don't play tournaments or only play a little bit during a season I get forced down into the lower ranks where I could end up against much much weaker than myself. Night fury said this was to prevent people climbing the ranks too fast, but honestly THAT'S STUPID! THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO PREVENT THAT! THIS ONLY PUNISHES PEOPLE FOR LACK OF ACTIVITY OR NOT CLIMBING FAST ENOUGH IN THE FIRST PLACE! Also are we going to have the same 9 maps for tournaments the same freaking 3 in each game mode EVERY SEASON?!?!?! THIS IS GETTING BORING FAST!
Leaderboards. I'm used to these in most games I've played being meaningless beyond a status symbol. I get some people might want more of a reason to try and chart a leaderboard, but this feels like it encourages addictive play to me. Then worse, these leaderboards aren't even about playing. I can see you've changed the name of some of the leaderboards from "playoff event". Yet even the ones still called "playoff event" can be won by paying instead of playing. So it's more like a payoff event, cause it "pays off" for plarium, and it's a competition of who has the fattest wallet.
Seeker. Why can this thing teleport 100 meters and more with an implant? Who's idea was that? Why does it get a damage boost of 30% on 24 max energy capacity giving it near 32 energy to use while its teleport is active? This mech is freaking braindead. Same goes for volti. In fact that one might even be worse because it never has to put itself in any danger to use its ability which works through walls and works at 100+ meters. Seeker is still bad though because it doesn't require any skill to use. Freaking cheap, freaking braindead. Maybe these mechs aren't great late game, but they'res incredibly freaking stupid and OP in the mid game. And when they SP drop its worse. Make these players take more risks to use their abilities so they can't hide in their spawn like a coward and spam their abilities and reduce the range of their abilities drastically.
Pop-ups. GET RID OF THE POPUPS ALREADY! EVERYBODY HATES THE POPUPS! I KNOW THEY'RE INTENDED TO GRAB YOUR ATTENTION THAT'S WHY WE HATE THEM! NO THEY AREN'T A GOOD WAY TO INFORM PLAYERS OF ONGOING OFFERS AND BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH THEY'RE JUST ANNOYING!
It used to be that all weapons of a given energy capacity would cost the same in game resources for their equivalents in credits and a-coins. Now a legendary 5 star 8 energy weapon in gear hub can cost 7500 a-coins or 8275 a-coins. And the 8 energy weapons can cost 650k credit, 700k, 800k, and 827,500 credit. These are supposedly all supposed to be equally good options to spend our resources on so why are they priced so drastically different? The price is clearly more on newer weapons too. So common to epic grade stuff got a price decrease but some legendary equipment, and only some which is the new more META and adjacent equipment, got a price increase? Why?
Hangar Showdown. HANGAR SHOWDOWN IS THE WORST PART OF THIS WHOLE GARBAGE FREAKING GAME. Hangar Showdown is an abomination of a game mode and I actually think it should just be deleted from the game entirely. This game mode was a complete and utter mistake. Now I thought this was supposed to be a skill based game. But you CAN NOT call hangar showdown "skill based". This game mode is luck based. Your teammate is luck based. Who wins the match is highly dependent on what mechs everyone picks each round. You only get one mech per round so once you pick your mech and you die there's no coming back with a mech that can counter your opponent. So how do you win hangar showdown? The only realistic way is to use the best generally performing mechs. There is little to no room for personal skill expression in your hangar showdown setups, which in my eyes goes against the spirit of a skill based game. In fact I'd say that makes it pay to win because all the best generally performing mechs and weapons are all legendary and some of the best mechs and weapons to use generally are currently paywalled. The amount of wins you get within 10 battle entries determines the reward you can accumulate each day. So that's based on luck too. What's worse is HS is 1 of 2 ways to get mod parts and is by far the best. So I feel obligated to play this stupid abomination of a game mode which is again KINDA PAY TO WIN AND ALMOST PURELY LUCK BASED MAKING IT MORE PAY TO WIN, compared to the rest of the game which is already somewhat pay to win.
But actually no Hangar Showdown is the 2nd worst part of this garbage freaking game because the actual worst part of this game is the friction that comes with dailies, weeklies, limited events and the combat points limit. The amount of resources we can earn in a day is essentially limited to and by these things. Dailies, weeklies, limited events, all feel like CHORES. And the combat points limit makes it feel like I'm obligated to play a certain number of battles each day. Making the game overall feel like a chore. I like friction in games, but only when overcoming said friction benefits me. Like mmos being grindy to push you to make friends to chat with while you mindlessly grind. Or old super mario having 3 lives challenging you to beat the game without losing all them or having to start over having benefits for memory. Hell even just giving a sense of accomplishment. How is logging in to mech arena every day supposed to benefit me? I can't tell how this benefits me. It doesn't even give a sense of accomplishment. Some of these "challenges" for the dailies and events is to spend resources. How is that supposed to benefit me aside from get me stupid blueprints or maybe occasionally 100 a-coins. And dailies, your tournaments, event challenges, hangar showdown, all of which feels like obligations and 1 of which is just a miserable experience and something I feel goes against the spirit of the game, after you hit your combat point limit there's no reason to keep playing. I feel like I don't own my time in this game. There's no way for me to sit down on any day I want and grind it out for however long I want earning resources the whole time. I feel obligated to play a certain amount of time each day. And doing all this takes up far too much time. I just feel like I don't own my time with this game. What is the point of all this?
Oh wait I think I have an idea. If you miss a day and maybe you're too short and can't complete all the other challenges before the event ends because you have a life outside mech arena, maybe you can just
This is just disgusting actually. You basically have the option of no-lifing mech arena or spending your cash on them to complete these events.
As far as I can tell the friction of dailies and weeklies and limited events only benefits plarium's bottom line. The only thing it does is make people log in every day so plarium can market to them and they might purchase something. The only thing it does is coerce people to pay if they don't no-life this stupid game. These events can earn you spins in limited crate rushes which if you're short on the vent tasks or a-coins or whatever you have to wait an indefinite amount of time for the next crate rush with the same item(s) comes around, or pay up. This game uses FOMO to try and turn players into addicts and spenders and it's disgusting.
Wait no the actual ACTUAL worst thing about this game is the gambling. Mech arena contains gambling mechanics that can create problem gamblers later in life. For years the gaming industry has cast doubt on the idea that loot box purchases could lead to gambling addictions. However this now a proven fact by multiple peer-reviewed, longitudnal studies assessing the risk of loot box spenders engaging in gambling in problem gambling.
This includes a study by members of the factulty of education at Universidad Internacional de La Rioja (Spain), Department of Organizational Psychology at the University of London (UK), and the faculty of psychology at University of the Basque Country (Spain). https://eprints.bbk.ac.uk/id/eprint/50691/2/50691.pdf
A study by the members of the department of psychology at University of Brithish Colombia (Canada) https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s40359-025-02766-1
And a study by a team of researchers from KU Leuven and University of Ghent (Belgium) https://www.scimex.org/newsfeed/loot-boxes-in-games-might-be-a-gateway-for-teens-to-gamble-down-the-line
There's also multiple-cross sectional studies which show a correlation between loot box spending and problem gambling.
https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0206767
Now to credit the Mech Arena team, historically event crate rushes have had limited rewards and you could guarantee all the prizes with a given amount of spend. And nowadays most of these crate rushes can be participated in with in game currency. However, every now and then the team throws in an infinite rewards crate rush. Or a crate rush with some finite rewards and some infinite rewards. These I especially don't like. I don't think these are any different to loot boxes. If plarium was smart they would not ever do these again. I think as more and more research comes out and more and more people become aware of the effects of lootboxes on the minds of children, regulatory bodies around the world will begin to legislate these mechanics heavily. And may legislate them as gambling, meaning banning advertising these products to children under the age of 18.
Also regarding the limited rewards crate rushes I think there will need to be more studies there. Also it seems to present a new kind of friction, a friction where the challenge is not to gamble unless you can guarantee all the prizes, at which point it's no longer gambling. Now maybe this sort of "gambling until a point" system could be a neat way to teach people not to gamble. However there's two ways to overcome this friction in mech arena. Save your resources, and don't give in to fear of missing out, or
Now it seems like any sort of benefit derived from such a system is completely sidelined by the fact that you can buy your way past the point of friction. It's no longer teaching children not to gamble, which would be a perfect remedy for so many games having these loot box purchases in all these games creating gambling addicts out of minors. Instead it's teaching them to make impulse purchases. Sure, you could simply not spend money. You could if you're short enact some discipline and not give in to FOMO. But the game isn't teaching me that discipline. So this friction lacks any benefit, and is arguably harmful.
To sum up my complaints about the game
-Blueprints, having these randomized specific to any given item is stupid
-Matchmaking, fix the power ratings of things what are you waiting for?
-Bots, stop looking for excuses to fill my matches with them
-Match replays, multi-perspective, give
-Tounaments and players dropping a rank every season is stupid, stop dropping players a rank every season
-Leaderboards should not have tasks which you can complete, directly or indirectly, by spending real money
-I hate seeker and volti for how braindead they are. NERF the range of their abilities.
-Get rid of all the popups I'm tired of the stupid excuses everyone hates them and wants them gone
-Legendary weapon price increase
-Hangar Showdown is an abomination of a gamemode that defeats the spirit of this otherwise more skill based game and should just be deleted
-In game chores coercing you to no life for fear of missing out
-Loot box gambling is very very bad for children, it should not be in a game marketed at children. Why is it here?
-I don't even like the "gambling until a certain point" system in this game either with the option to buy your way to that point
When I first started playing this game I had 4 complaints. The blueprints, the matchmaking, the tournament structure and the lack of match replays. Now I have these 13 complaints. I've had other complaints that were later remedied. But even still after plarium fixed some of my initial complaints I have three times as many as I started with. Now I have to complain about your communication and your lack of transparency over and over as well. This is getting absolutely exhausting.
I did not grow up in this era of gaming with all these micro-transactions and gambling in video games. Pay-to-win gambling was a foreign concept. Non-existent to me. I'm a PC gamer who has mostly played on steam. I feel if this game were on steam, the review score would be similarly humiliating to the review score for war robots. The only good friction that comes from this game is the challenge of overcoming other human opponents, which is immediately spoiled by the bots who would in fact get this game dogged all over for daring to call itself a PvP game. This might be the worst game I have ever invested any serious time in if it weren't for war robots. Which the fact that it's better than war robots isn't saying much. Cause it's just barely better.
I made a suggestion for a new mech the other day because I like the PvP side of this game. But so much drags this game down. I want to have fun playing this game but like I said I'm getting exhausted. I don't know that I can keep playing this game. I make all these posts pointing out ways to improve the game and things that I feel drag the game down that I think you can fix. I feel I'm the only one who really cares that deeply about it. I feel like your team just treats fixing these friction points as mere suggestions, like my mech suggestion. But I could care less if my mech idea gets added to the game I would like to see a lot of the flaws of this game ironed out. But I have thrice as many complaints with this game as when I started. I feel like we've progressed backwards with staff communication back to the days of zero meaningful transparency and argumentative staff.
So I don't know why I make the mech suggestion. Why would I want you to take my mech suggestion when you won't take my more important ones, when you won't discuss them, when you won't answer them in any meaningful way if at all. Why do I care when you don't? I can't get myself to play this game sometimes, even though I want to have a little fun. I log in to the game, and I get bombarded with popups for shop offers, I'm reminded of my daily chores, there's event crates which could contain items I'm after which I can potentially miss out on, I've got to play stupid hangar showdown, and I don't want to play anymore. Any proposal I make to improve the game will get treated as a mere suggestion the degree to which it's followed is entirely up to the mech arena team. I can't get myself to play. I don't come out of playing this game with a sense of satisfaction. Instead I come out of it feeling a sense of dread. I just can't play this game. Your daily chores and the limited time event crates can't FOMO me into playing this game. I can play so much more that I can actually come out of feeling a sense of satisfaction. At this point the only attachment I feel to this game is the time I've already sunk into this. But it all feels like a waste of time, so why feel any attachment? I don't think I can keep playing this game. I started out with 4 complaints now I've got a litany of them. This team always seems to create more problems than they solve. It's depressing.
