Royal Guard is definitely good, and will help for a certain Spider 20 team, yes - but you've a long way to go before getting there. That said, I do think he'd be a better fit for your Dragon 20 team than Kael, so, yeah I think he's probably worth investing in. Spider is okay, but I wouldn't bother with her for now. Tomoe is pretty much trash, ignore her.
PS - you really shouldn't be using shards just on any random day. Save them for fusions.

One more option that I see no one offered so far - Armiger!
Uncommon champion. easy to get, easy to build, easy to book (use copies from market and mystery shards - not rare books!), and he is great for normal dragon and spider
Armiger is good for Spider yes, but not on his own. I don't want to recommend champs for the OP to build, when they may end up being replaced by others he gets - for example he just got one Royal Guard, and if he gets another and/or someone like Coldheart, he may not end up needing Armiger at all.

Royal guard is priority in this case. Personaly - I believe Armiger is a good option to build as he can take place in all 4 (or at least 3 - dragon, spider and fire knight) traditional dungeons . When I struggled to pass spider 20 I had Royal guard and coldheart and still used Armiger as well.

I've 60ed Royal Guard and also ran lots of Dragon lvl19 runs (very slow runs!). Got lots of pretty good armours during the recent Dragon event. I have a usable setup for him now (only by my standard of course).
I've been following the advice of not using any summons until a good event appears. Then I realized that I had another champ that seems worth talking about - Sepulcher Sentinel.
How is this guy? Seems potentially good in CB & Spider. I am about 80% through getting enough materials to 60 the next candidate. I do have 9 blue and 1 pink crystals saved so far.

Sepulcher will probably be on your shortlist for a CB team, but you're missing too many other pieces for now I think. Keep her in your radar, but don't level her just yet. For now, focus on getting to Dragon 20.

He does seem to need much better equipment than Kael, and for now, I have better equipments for Kael.
Looks like I'll have to work towards Dragon 20, as you have mentioned already.
I can reliably do Dragon 20 now, but slowly at 6-7min per run. Not using Royal Guard at the moment.
Curious, why do people only focus on lvl20 and not higher?
Basically, the RoI doesn't usually warrant the extra time. 23 or 24 i think is the "perfect" one, but generally requires better teams and is slower to run. You get slightly better items, but you also use more energy.
Just went past 90 days now.
I have enough food to 60 two champs now, but not sure what to level next. Looks like the best candidate is Sepulcher but not very convincing at the moment, so she says at 50.
I have not had any significant pulls since then. And I've mostly been grinding at 12-3 when I have x2, and also Dragon 20 and Spider 14 if there's any special events. Oh and also, Minatour when I have nothing else to do. I can get the top prize in Nightmare CB every day.
I have been improving Royal Guard 60 equipment, but my current Dragon 20 team is so reliable (100%/6mins), that I don't know if I want to touch that team yet. Slow speed is not that much of a big deal at the moment. Kael is at around 35-40s on 12-3.
So what now? lol.
Depends on how comfortable you are just grinding away with things. My personal vote would be to start saving up your shards/etc and using them for fusions, because that'll probably be the best way to jumpstart your teams, rather than trying to use them on random 2x events where you may or may not get a useful champ.
As for Sepulcher - she's good, but she won't change anything for you right now.
