Most F2P players are naive & living in the world with free food, aren't you ?
Every event/tournament/fusion event/doom tower/etc. is for money and there is nothing wrong with it, it's the way our world run.
There are 2 ways you could achieve tournament prizes:
1) Spend money for all energies/gems/champs and gain the prize.
2) Using long time saving (several months or year) and one day you could gain the prize without spending money.
However time is money, imagine how much money you could earn in months, year, this or that, it's also money.

Completely agree with the rest of your words...But not "Most F2P players are naive & living in the world with free food, aren't you ?"
Please make your words clear..There are two types of world - Virtual (like these kind of games) and the real world....
You might be disrespecting those f2p players who actually earn in the real world and just seeking some entertainment in these kind of games (aka the virtual world) which for them it might not be really affordable to spend the money that they earn in the real world because they might have other plans for their money (like spending it in the real world for real food).
I'm a low spending player. Bought some void shard packs back when I was new and got the gambling bug in me. Since then I've been a bit chill and spent no money. I'm not that far into the game, less than a year.
From my own experiences at 60 days I was no where near the ability to compete in let alone complete these shard events (I'm also including summon rush). My shard counts just weren't there.
I've seen or read about players who have, and I know youtubers like Hell Hades do a bang up job on it. But that just wasn't me.
Flash forward 5-6 months, though and I was at a point where I was getting a fair amount of shards (mostly ancients) from various sources, 1-2 voids from Normal doomtower every month as well as more from login rewards, mission progression, faction wars, and so on. Have even gotten shards from Gold Arena 4-5 rewards. Unfortunately I haven't really gotten shards from Clan Boss. I'm still stuck on Nightmare, haven't been able to progress to UNM, for various reasons. But the point is, I hardly ever get shards from Nightmare and they have always been ancients when I do, maybe, just maybe a couple times a month.
Despite all this, using a combination of saved fragment collections, fusions, and in one case a free login champ that I delayed pulling for almost a week, I've climbed fairly high on the chase tournament reward ladder. Never finished one, but have nabbed the first legendary book a couple times.
Definitely doable though, but takes some time and preparation as free to play.
As for champ training, those are easier to do as a free to play, requiring just time and energy and a small supply of mystery shards (I'm thinking like 100-200) which you can get in a couple of months of play. The secret as others have said is to spend some time training up your ready to go food champs above level 1, either through campaign or brews, before actually feeding them. It seems counterintuitive, but it multiplies your points so much more than just grinding up rank stars alone.
You can look around the web to see what's optimal in terms of training food champs, typically I've read/heard its like a 1 brew per rank of champ equivalent. So 2 same-affinity brews, or 32k xp, for a 2-star, 3 for a 3-star, etc. I only do a n-1 brew equivalent myself, so 1 brew for 2-star, 2 brews for 3-star, etc.
At the beginning, once I learned that trick from others, I used to do level up all food champs, but now I just bother with 3 star and above. Its still enough for me to complete the events.
I feel your pain. My account is 21 days old and if I didn't fall for Plarium's scheme to get me to buy more shards to try to get a specific Legendary during a 2x event (and spent $1000!!!!) My account wouldn't be flooded with dozens of epic champions and ten legendaries now. That's a lot to gear up! I am overwhelemd and crippled with indecision. Focus on what you do have and not what you don't. Things will grow naturally and you and I and will be able to tackle future Tournaments without needing to open up our pocket books.
