No, if you want to be correct you need mastery's, mastery's are the most valuable sink that you can throw gems into, but for the long term commit of your account you need the gem 

Rufus, why not just lock this entire thread? It's an old thread, almost every recent post in it is just spam - some are dressed up as a relevant reply, but still include random spam links.

I havent touched the mine, and honestly ive used lots of my gems on masteries because having full masteries makes such a huge difference to the game, clan boss even more.

As others have said, if you are in the game long term then the mine is your best investment.

Once fully upgraded, I spent the next 800 on maxing masteries on my Kael.

After that l bought 900 gems worth of ancient shards.

I am also f2p.

As a free to play for the long run. always do sparring pit to max level. After that do open each part of the pit to level one. then all to level 2 then 3. that way you can get more champs to level up at once. then the rest of the game is free gems

Do  not  upgrade  sparring  pit.

mine  and  then  save  also  usinng  gems  to  fully  upgrade  mastries  will  really  help  if  your  stuck  on  progression
