ok... for example, you on your city and you attacked by an enemy, you troops were in defense... and you will get bonuses during defense.. but if they will go to attack somebody with gear for "defense" you will not have this bonuses because they work only when you defense. the same with "during attack" bonuses. 

In response to the last, how do you go total defence and get all bonuses. I see it in game and it gets confusing. I got battered by a fair inferior player, yet my killers were maxed out on hero skills and military knowledge. Thanks

you should prioritize your set bonuses and boost, knowledge.

the first - u must remember about enemy's troops. Make them weaker (their skills, knowledge and boosts for this).

the next - make you proffile troops stronger for type of fight (attack, defense. OS...)

concentrate on one type of troops helps make this troops more stronger then troop's mix. 

Higher we talked about special bonuses for attack and defense, this bonuses are universal for all troops but have limitations. Not so far time ago it was the beat bonuses for war. Now we have stronghold forge with a special gear, that a little better and suitable for defense and attack both.
