Hello Jarls!

We have an exercise for you that seems easy only at first glance. Can you solve it and explain your answer?

The formula is equivalent to 8 / 2 x (1+4)

You do whats in the parenthesis first (1+4), then multiplication or division in order from left to right, so 8 div 2 then multiply the result by 4

ANSWER = 16

I agree with everything stated above, and your explanation is spot on.

Answer = 16

Order of operation. It's 16

I believe its  a problem of wether or not you follow the old rules of BODMAS, or the new rules, for order of operation, which probably depends on how old you are, or how current your information or your knowledge is , or if you have children who know about the different intrepretation.

So both answers are correct as depicted by the majority so far and the one dissenter.

Actually on looking again  it looks like the one dissenter has made a mistake,and the puzzle shows no powers of numbers which from memory are done first in the new system of operations.Too tired and busy to check this now.

Actually misread what the dissenter wrote, the answer is 1 in the old system, and probably 16, in the new one.

The answer is 16.

Using the rule system of BODMAS (https://www.mathsisfun.com/operation-order-bodmas.html)

8÷2(1+3)

B Brackets. 1+3 becomes 4 so we can rewrite the question as

8÷2(4) = 8÷2×4

DM Divide or Multiply from left to right

8÷2×4 = 4×4 = 16

PEDMAS...AND  for equal operations, Left to Right...

For the equation: 8 ÷ 2(1+3)

the answer is 16

psst: to make the '÷' sign on the mac...use 'option' + '/' keys...for the sloppy PC, use 'alt' + '0247'

inside the brackets first 1+3 =4

Then the multiplier attached to the bracket  2 x 4 =8

Then what is left: ie 8 divided by 8 =1

I would make the answer 1

(the whole point of the brackets is to separate the figures inside the brackets from the multiplier attached to it.)

Now to prove there is only one correct answer .....

to get 16 the equation should be written (8 / 2) x (1+3)

or more clumsily : 8/2 x (1+3)

( I don't have a mac lol)

According to the Vedic Scrolls hidden in the Trijillian Ancestral Habitat, somewhere in Davionian Archy in the Samtilion Galaxy...the answer, as transcribed in the Chronicles of Kalamazoo, chpt 7 & 9, v134..."let no trajhim (human) pass between worlds without knowledge of the answer!'

The verse assumes the respondent can answer on pain of death...

Fearing death, I must equivocate in my answer to ensure comportment to the Scrolls of Kalamzoo!

it is either 1 or 16...depending on just how ignorant of the rules you can be...Place Everyone Down My AsS  [PEDMAS}]translation: come ride my donkey)...and for those not native to these shores....Bet One Donkey Makes A Shyt [BODMAS] (translation: Whatever you do, don't ride this donkey!)

Ok, Ok

If I'm not kicked for using the synonym for "donkey", or the variant for do-do,...the answer is 16!

8÷2(1+3)...P or B: (1+3) results in 8÷2*4; since Divison and Multiplication are equal in stature, the Order of Operations proceeds from left to right: 8÷2=4 and 4*4=16

trying to put my answer in practical terms: there is a group of 8 people of which 2 people have 4 apples each, which they share - so each person gets one apple.

... or there is a group of 8 people of which half have 4 apples each, which they share, so each person gets two apples.

so the correct answer is obvious

initially, I intended to say the answer is 16, based off of the PEMDAS order of operations I was taught n school, and the fact that in English we read left to right, and math is done left to right.

So by this method:

 8/2(1+3)=X

Would be consolidated to:

8/2(4)=X

-or-

8/2*4=X

And since Multiplication and Division take same priority, we would then go from left to right.

8/2=4

4*4=X

X=16

By technicality, this can probably be solved both ways; The multiplication or division first.

Which makes all the difference, as to whether the answer is 16, as stated above, or 1 as explained below.

8/2(3+1)=X

8/2(4)=X.... 2(4)=8

8/8=X

X=1

So I suppose it boils down to which direction one reads their language in.

If memory serves me correctly, Plarium is an Israeli based company, and Hebrew is read right to left.

So the answer I will go with is X= א

...But since we are in the heathen spirit here, perhaps I will go with: X= Sextán  -after all.

8/2(1+3)

First, do things in parentheses.

(1+3) = 4

Apart from that it goes from left to right.

8/2x4

8/2=4x4=16

16

oh ye of little faith

how can 8 divided by 2(1+3)    =     8 divided by (1+3) over 2                 ?????

ie some of you are suggesting that 8 halves x 4       i.e.  (4x4 =16)

                 is the same as 8 divided by 4 halves        i.e.   (8/2 =4 (not 16))
