You can't raid the arena. (Can dispatch more troops in a raid, than not.)
Everything else, offense if you are attacking, defense if you are not.
Attacking the ES starts with the former but becomes the latter if you are successful.
Mentioned on Discord is using more Defense on ES where it can be more important that you hold onto the ES despite troop losses, to prevent timer reset.
Use the best of what you have for that moment.
You don't need castle gear to attack the attackers.
But the question:
Do seige gear and Castle gear work on both. Saw the discussion that if it says "Castle:" before the item it is castle armor.
Here is the problem. Championships are done in the Building:Arena which implies Seige; however, clicking on the Citadel shows Castle:Citadel which implies Castle equipment. So which armour set is best?
Technically if I go by the picture no troop enters the Citadel walls because the Arena is outside it; however, the arena is considered part of the Citadel holdings implying Castle armor.
So which is it. Can we get a straight "official" answer?

This is cross-mixing things. There is town gear (be it Spear, Cavalry, Ranged, Knight, Siege, or Scout), and castle gear. The same gems and runes apply to both. (i.e. If you have Spear, and trained, you use spear gems and runes on the equipment - be it castle equipment, or town equipment.)
Castle armor does better for castles - don't use castle armor on town battles. Castles are ES, Arena, Rebel Towers and Rampart.
