In the single hunt, the game uses all resources past the max level until you have nothing left. It used 140 emeralds on refills and whatever game refills I had.

Solo Hunt is aimed at getting rewards from fights with Undead that's why the Hunt doesn't stop when the Champion reaches the maximum level.
If you want just to upgrade your Champion to the highest level, it's better to use a Group Hunt (even for just one Champion).
