Champion Dev Notes

Champions. Overview

Champions are special Units endowed with Skills that provide various boosts to your Castle and armies. The benefits they provide are different from those of Legendary Units, which improve the statistics of only a certain number of Units. The Bonuses given by a Champion are calculated on top of other Unit-enhancing bonuses, meaning that an upgraded Champion can provide a huge boost to your army.

Another advantage of Champions is that they never die. If a Champion loses a battle, they only get stunned for a certain period of time. This means that the Champions you upgrade remain in your collection forever unless you sacrifice them.

Champion Parameters

The power of Champion Bonuses depends on the following:

1. Grade (I to V). Grade V Champions are much stronger than Grade IV Champions and are more difficult to find.

2. Rank (represented by stars, 1 to 6). Upgrading the Champion’s Rank drastically increases the power of its Bonuses. However, upgrading a Champion to a Rank of 5 or 6 can prove to be quite a challenge.

3. Level (1 to 40). The higher the Champion’s Level, the greater their Bonuses. However, the maximum Level a Champion can reach is limited by their Rank, which is indicated by the number of stars they have. See the following example:

  • Rank I (★): Max Level of Champion: 15
  • Rank II (★★): Max Level of Champion: 20
  • Rank III (★★★): Max Level of Champion: 25
  • Rank IV (★★★★): Max Level of Champion: 30
  • Rank V (★★★★★): Max Level of Champion: 30 (Enlightenment: 35)
  • Rank VI (★★★★★★): Max Level of Champion: 30 (Enlightenment: 40)

Each time their Rank is improved, your Champion’s Level is reset.

Note also that a Level 15 Champion with the Rank of 6 (i.e. a Champion that has six stars) will be much stronger than a Level 15 Champion with the Rank of 1 (one star).

4. Skill Level (0 to 5 per Skill). Upgrading Skills using Orbs will increase the power of a Champion’s Bonuses.

5. Enlightenment Level (0 to 5). This is represented by a number on the top right of your Champion’s portrait. There are five stages of Enlightenment, and each one boosts all the Skills of your Champion. A Champion with the Rank of five or six can only reach their highest Level with Enlightenment.

You can upgrade a Champion’s Rank (i.e. how many stars they have), Level, Skill Level, and Enlightenment Level. The only thing you cannot upgrade is the Champion’s Grade.

Champion Types

There are 12 Types of Champions. Go to the “Champions” tab at the Shrine of Summoning and tap the “Champions” button to view all 12 types. The type of Champion you should use depends on the action you wish to take. For example, if you’re attacking a Beacon you only send one type of Champion - a “Beacon Offense” Champion, which makes sense when you think about it.

Only Champions that boost Resource Production, Spying, and Castle Defense can be activated in the “Activate” tab at the Shrine of Summoning.

New currency - Champion Stones

Champion Stones are a Premium Resource. They can be exchanged for Summoning Bonds, Champion XP Boosts, and more. You can get Champion Stones at the Bank and by upgrading Champions to the maximum Level.*

  • Rank I (★): Reward in Champion Stones: 2
  • Rank II (★★): Reward in Champion Stones: 5
  • Rank III (★★★): Reward in Champion Stones: 10
  • Rank IV (★★★★): Reward in Champion Stones: 100
  • Rank V (★★★★★): Reward in Champion Stones: 200
  • Rank VI (★★★★★★): Reward in Champion Stones: 500

* this is available until August 27.

In the future we plan to add Tournaments and Events that will give you the chance to get even more Champion Stones.

Getting new Champions

Once you’ve reached Level 40 you’ll receive a series of quests. Once you’ve completed these quests you’ll receive two Champions.

You can also get new Champions by using Summoning Bonds. There are three types of Summoning Bonds:

  • Basic Summoning Bond. This Bond will summon Champions of the following Grades (the exact Champion summoned is random, and the likelihood that you’ll end up with a Champion of a given Grade is provided in parentheses): Grade I (likely), Grade II (rarely), and Grade III (very rarely)
  • Epic Summoning Bond. This Bond will summon Champions of the following Grades: Grade II (likely), Grade III (occasionally), and Grade IV (rarely)
  • Holy Summoning Bond. This Bond will summon Champions of the following Grades: Grade IV (likely) and Grade V (occasionally)

Summoning Bonds can summon a Champion of a Rank of up to 3 (i.e. from one to three stars):

  • Rank 1 (one star) - will likely be summoned
  • Rank 2 (two stars) - will occasionally be summoned
  • Rank 3 (three stars) - will rarely be summoned

Champions with a Rank of 4 or higher cannot be summoned using Summoning Bonds.

Ways to obtain Summoning Bonds:

  • Defeating the Undead can bring you any of the three types of Summoning Bonds (even the rarest type, the Holy Summoning Bond).
  • Basic and Epic Summoning Bonds can be acquired with Champion Stones.
  • Summoning Bonds can be acquired in Packs at the “Champion Stones” tab in the Bank.

In the future we plan to add Tournaments and Events that will give you the chance to get even more Summoning Bonds.

Upgrading Champions

You will need Champion XP to level up. Fighting the Undead with a Champion will earn your Champion XP. Sacrificing unneeded Champions can also give XP to a selected Champion.

Fighting the Undead

To fight the Undead you need Energy. Each battle requires 10 Energy Points. The maximum amount you can have is 100 Energy Points. It takes five hours from the time you used up the last of your Energy for it to fully restore. However, you can restore the full amount at any time with only 10 Champion Stones.

There are 20 Levels of Undead. In most cases you can maximize your rewards (Champion XP, Summoning Bonds, and Energy) if you defeat the Undead in a single attempt.

Each Undead has a certain amount of HP, and each of your Champions has their own Attack Power. If the Champion’s Attack Power is greater than the Undead’s HP, the Champion will defeat the Undead. In doing this, your Champion will get all the Champion XP as well as any additional Reward offered. As a result, pay close attention to the Undead’s remaining HP and the Attack Power of your Champion.

When considering which Undead you should fight, follow this rule:

Undead Level = Champion Level / 2 (rounded up)

Example:

Level 1 Champion should fight Level 1 Undead

Level 2 Champion should fight Level 1 Undead

Level 3 Champion should fight Level 2 Undead

Level 4 Champion should fight Level 2 Undead

Level 5 Champion should fight Level 3 Undead

And so on.

Not being able to defeat the Undead in a single Battle will result in you earning fewer Champion XP.

See the following example:

If your Level 1 Champion fights a Level 1 Undead you will receive 789 Champion XP.

If your Level 1 Champion fights a Level 20 Undead you will receive only 263 Champion XP (also no Summoning Bonds because you haven’t defeated the Undead).

Pitting your high-level Champion against a low-level Undead will be similarly unprofitable as the little XP you receive for the fight won’t be worth the Energy you spend.

Get the most out of the final strike

Send low-level Champions to deliver the coup de grâce to weakened Undead. If your Champion’s level is significantly less than the level of the Undead, the final strike will earn you a huge amount of Champion XP.

The ideal scenario would see your Level 1 Champion defeating a Level 20 Undead.

For example:

If your Level 1 Champion delivers the final strike to a Level 20 Undead, your Champion will get 9,223 Champion XP and become a Level 10 Champion. Just like that.

Calculate the difference between your high-level Champion’s Attack Power and a Level 20 Undead’s HP so as not to defeat it in one go. Draw the fight out, then replace your high-level Champion with the lowest level one you have.

For example:

  1. You use a Level 38 Champion (Attack Power 28,953) to fight a Level 20 Undead (HP 31,948)
  2. Once the Undead’s HP is down to 2995, you bring in a Level 15 Champion (Attack Power 2,508)
  3. Once the Undead’s HP is 487, you deliver the coup de grâce with a Level 1 Champion and, voila, that Champion gets upgraded to Level 10.

Use this method to level up your weaker Champions faster.

Upgrading Champions by sacrificing weaker Champions

While this is the fastest way to upgrade Champions, it requires you to sacrifice other Champions and Resources (5,000 or more of each Resource).

We recommend that you sacrifice unneeded Champions of Grade I or II in order to upgrade the Champions you need. It’s also worth noting that Champions only disappear after being sacrificed.

If you don’t have enough Champions to spare, you can always summon some using Basic Summoning Bonds that will cost you 10 Champion Stones.

Ideally, you’re going to want to try sacrificing Rank 1 Champions because you’re going to need those higher-Rank Champions eventually (see below).

Upgrading Your Champion’s Rank

First, get your Champion to the highest Level their current Rank allows. Then sacrifice Champions of the same Rank as your chosen Champion.

The amount of Champions you sacrifice must be equal to the current Rank of your Champion.

For example:

To upgrade a Champion from Rank 1 to Rank 2, you need to sacrifice one Rank 1 Champion.

To upgrade a Champion from Rank 2 to Rank 3, you need to sacrifice two Rank 2 Champions.

To upgrade a Champion from Rank 3 to Rank 4, you need to sacrifice three Rank 3 Champions.

And so on.

After their Rank is improved, your Champion’s Level is reset. You must once again bring them up to the highest available Level in order to reach the next Rank.

If you don’t have enough Champions of the corresponding Rank to sacrifice, you will need to increase the Rank of those Champions you plan to sacrifice. Champions of Rank 2 or 3 might be better kept as sacrificial lambs and used to increase your higher-level Champion’s Rank.

The Level of the Champions you use for upgrading Ranks doesn’t matter.

Upgrading Champion Skills

Most Champions have a set of 4 Skills that affect one of the 4 Unit types (exceptions are the Spying Type Champion, which has only 1 Skill, and Resource Champions, whose Skills affect Resource Production and Barn And Warehouse capacity). To upgrade a Champion’s Skill you will need to use an Orb of a certain Grade. Initially, each Skill is Level 0, and the maximum Level in can reach is Level 5. That means that to upgrade all of a Champion’s Skills to the maximum Level, you will need 20 Orbs (5 for the Spying Champion).

Enlightenment

This is represented by a number on the top right of your Champion’s portrait. There are 5 stages of Enlightenment, and each one boosts all the Skills of your Champion. To enlighten a Champion, you will need to sacrifice another one of the same Grade and Type. The sacrificed Champion will disappear.

Example. You have a Champion of the ‘Castle Defense’ Type. Their Rank is 4, their Level is 30, and their Grade is III. To enlighten this Champion you will need another ‘Castle Defense’ Type Champion with Grade III. Their Level and Rank do not matter.

Use duplicate Champions to enhance your main Champion.

Activating Champions

You can have up to two Champions activated at a time. Champions of the following types can be activated: Castle Defense, Spying, and Resource Production. Important: These Champions do not provide any Bonuses unless they are activated.

If one of your activated Champions is for Castle Defense and its Element matches with your other activated Champion, you will receive an Element Bonus while defending your Castle. The current Element is represented by the Shrine’s color at the Castle.

If your Castle is successfully attacked, the Champions you had activated at the time will be left stunned. This is why it is preferable not to leave the Castle undefended.

PvP Battles

When deploying your Units on Offensive or Defensive missions, you can send Champions whose type fits the mission. This will boost the army’s combat statistics.

Up to 3 Champions can be stationed at a Castle as Reinforcements. The Champion with the most developed Skills will be the only one to affect the combat statistics of the Units sent with them. An exception is when one of the Champions is the Castle Defense type and another is the Spying type - both Champions will provide bonuses in this case (the Castle Defense Champion will boost Defensive Units, and the Spying Champion will enhance Spying Units).

Champion Elements

Each Champion has an Element (Earth, Fire, or Water).

Water is super effective against Fire, Fire is super effective against Earth, and Earth is super effective against Water.

When you summon a Champion with the help of a Summoning Bond, their Element is randomly selected.

If your Element choice is super effective against the enemy’s Element, you will receive a 25% bonus to your Champion's Skills. For example, if the Champion’s Skill power equals 10% and their Element wins, the total Skill power will be increased to 12.5%.

When 2 or more Champions are stationed at the Castle as Reinforcements, the representative Element will be the Element that most of the Champions have.

Example 1. 3 Champions are stationed at the Castle: 2 of them belong to the Water Element and 1 belongs to the Earth Element. In a battle the Water Element will be fighting against the enemy Champion’s Element.

Example 2. 3 Champions are stationed at the Castle, their Elements are different (Fire, Earth, and Water). There can be no representative Element and so, the enemy Champion will have the 25% Element Bonus.

Defending Beacons with Champions

Champions stationed at Beacons provide Bonuses to the Units that were sent with them and to the Reinforcements already stationed at the Beacon. Please note that Bonus is applied only to the Reinforcements of the player who sent the Champion.

The representative Element will be the Element that the most Champions at the Beacon have. If this is not possible (for example, if there are 3 Champions, each having different Elements), then there will be no representative Element chosen.

Example. The Beacon’s garrison includes 50 Champions with a Water Element, 40 Champions with a Fire Element, 80 Champions with an Earth Element.

If the enemy’s prevailing Element is Water, the defenders will receive the 25% Bonus to Skills (because Earth beats Water).

If the Enemy’s prevailing Element is Fire, they will be the ones to receive the 25% Bonus to Skills (because Fire beats Earth).

Unavailable Champions

If a Champion loses a battle they become stunned. During this time they cannot be used or upgraded.

A Rank 1 Champion will remain stunned for 1 day, a Rank 2 Champion for 2 days, and so on up to a Rank 6 Champion, which remains stunned for 6 days.

You can recover a stunned Champion immediately using Champion Stones.

"Champions stationed at Beacons provide bonuses only to the Units that were sent with them."

Is this correct?

Hopefully the bonus covers ,only your troops at beacon.

Having recall everytime to upgrade, is a time consuming hassle. They mix with your troops in Catacombs.

When enlightening a maxed champion it says it rewards the same amount of stones as when the champion was maxed, but no stones are actually rewarded. This is very misleading and led me to pick a bad strategy before I noticed this flaw.

Each element has a weakness and strength. Fire is weak to water, for example. If you choose wisely, you can increase your Champion's bonus by 25% ;)
