Always test the Battleground with small and lower level troops. For example for offensive (red) Battleground send five pikemen, for defensive (green) Battleground send 5 archers. This will give you report about Balur's troops attacking / defending that Battleground. For offensive battleground  you may want to send type of troops that are the lowest in number. For defensive battleground you may want to send type of troops th highest in number. This will allow you to conquer the battleground with least amount of lost troops

the easiest way i've found to deal with battle grounds are as follows , try to hit the highest or second highest bg you have unlocked but don't defeat it ,leave it til a bg event comes around by then you should have a couple of bgs almost zeroed which will be easy pickings. this method ensures that even if the pay from the actual bg are kinda low its pay is coupled with the event and( due to prior preparation) the potential to score high in your tier thus earning saphires as well.

also generally speaking the only 'real' way to ensure a bg pay out other then the one i wrote above is to constantly shove in your buildable troops.

note: do not send powerful units into the bg they are there to convert weaker units into powerful units which consume less food.

Try Not to do anything with battle grounds until you can rebuild what you make and lose in them. 1-20 is ok but wait after that. 

Howa to do battle grounds:

Start with a smaller one like lvl 2 wipe it out with like 50 archers. BUT 1-10lvl you only need one dragon

1-9 deffense 1 griffin

Up the next lvl3 50 archers

Lvl 4 70 archers

Lvl 5 100 archers

Lvl 6 130 archers

Lvl 7 150 archers

Lvl 8 200 archers

Lvl 9 250 archers

Lvl 10 300 archers

Now all in all, you just need to fill the BANK

THE BANK: the bank is the troops you put into battle grounds that die, and when you fill the bank, you are rewarded.the more rss value per troop higher rewards

Best troops for battle ground: Demons and wizards and any troops with high rrs value 

And hey even if you fail to wipe out the battle ground that's OK you just need to fill the bank, fill
