Not sure what the intelligence bonus is you are talking about but the defense bonus is a % bonus to your troops defense. For instance a sentry gives 100 defense bonus. This would be a 1% bonus to your troops defense in the castle. This is how I believe it works anyway.

I have atacked that had no troops but had a catapult and immortal and I still lost troops, do they have and def power at all or did some reinforce them?

Bonus is working only with troops. So you need to put defensive units in order to increase their def power.

I thought I read somewhere that a sentry gives a bonus to your spies at your castle so you get better defence against enemy spies. I this true?

Defence buildings give bonus to defensive characteristics of units. For example, Silent Ones will have bonus to their defensive characteristics, too.

If you have 7000 castle defense, then bonus will be + 70%

IIRC, sentries improve your intelligence defense, which aids you against spies

So.....10',000 at the gate is a 100% bonus?   Sweet!

Will my castle defense apply to reinforcements at my castle?  If Jane loans me 100 griffon....they get bonus too?  Or are they under her castle bonus?

this matters a lot....if I send 500,000 support to a junior member....which castle bonus covers my reinforce, please?

Castle bonus apply to all defence troops in it.

Your reinforcements will get deff bonus depending on junior castle.

In the description of sentry, catapults and Castle wall it mentions about increasing the Def stat of defending units in your castle. The units you can place outside the wall however do not mention any increased Def bonus. Do the immortals , red dragons ect also contribute to the Def bonus awarded to defending units. ?

YEDAN, yes, they increase total deff bonus of castle and also counts as deff units with their own health.

Okay I understand that having 2000 castle defense equals 20% increase in defense...but how do I know that it is really working? Checking the defense of units doesn't show anything...

It works.  Over the weekend, I took,a hit from a larger castle.... While I outnumbered the attacker only 2:1, I lost barely 20% of the attacker loss....and I got my 1/3 back at infirmary.  Gate strength of 12,800 makes your castle very hard to flame with reasonable defense.

it can also help you with those 100% kills.......very impressive when your attacker walks away with ZERO!  To me....once you outnumber your attacker around 10:1 they suffer 100% loss....or so close to it....the rest their league loses a little heart.

still.....upset the wrong league.....nothing can save the day.
