I usually send my troops to a friendly Pantheon or a fellow Coalition member’s City - having good allies really helps  , especially if they’re active daily.

If you're stepping away for an extended period, the basics are: activate your Peace Shield if you have one, join an active Alliance for mutual protection, and make sure your warehouses are upgraded so you don't lose resources to raids. Also worth checking if your city has a "Vacation Mode" or auto-shield feature some Plarium games offer temporary protection for inactive players.
