My cynical clanmates are suggesting that it'll just be an increase to the cap, and that the slots themselves will require purchasing like normal.

When they increased the normal champ slots, they charged for every 10 like normal. Vault will likely be the same.

Having a hard time beliving it will be free either. The silver cost is getting quite insane though. The one im at is 16 million for 10 spaces.

Yep certainly a moneymaking opportunity - read the update - 'Added 100 more slots to the max size of the champion vault' - so you can only access them when you've spent up to the current max size - nothing about free slots

1. Add a function that means we need to keep more champs in Faction Guardians
2. Increase the size of the vault and charge gems or silver to open them

I was kinda wondering along a similar line. Why is there ANY limit to the number of champs? I'm no programmer, but I've worked with some of the largest databases in the world. There is just no reason for a limit of 400, 500, or 1000 records. All I can think is that if it were unlimited some players may neglect their collection and have 10K incubus on hand.
But yeah! If my storage and inbox are full, how can I open more shards? Why would I buy any?

True, but you have to spend gems or silver tp get to the max, but your point about storage is valid, I guess it comes down to control, they have no actual need to control the size of the storage but feel compelled to do it

Yes. And it makes no sense to me. If it were unlimited, but they continued to charge an increasing amount of silver/gems for every 10 slots, whales would have room for 10K champs. That's a lot of revenue they are crossing off the books.
[EDIT] ok maybe 10k is overstating, but yeah.
