If I were to guess it would be so that the devs can easily adjust a stage's difficulty without having to worry how each champ should be geared. You'd then be able to gauge the enemies' stats/difficulties this way. Just makes things simpler I guess. 

On the other hand, I'm just glad we don't have to rank champs past 6 stars either.
