I personally am leaving the mine last because of steep cost and extremely long turnaround. It'll take 100 days for the mine to pay itself off for level 1. I asked someone the cost to upgrade to lvls 2 and 3, as well as the max limit and time it takes to fill, but I forget what they said. Been spending my gems on the sparring pit, a couple store openings, and making room in the Champion Vault. The last one is more personal pref/ocd type thing, I want to have at least 1 of every champion. What's the champion vault and where is it at? I thought about the store expansion but I think I'm quite happy with what the store has to offer for now. I see nothing good at the bottom anyway. :D
IF you are F2p player like me, (F2P for free to play) and you are only playing the game for the first time to see if you like it, I suggest expanding 1st on marketplace storage, because you will get ancient shards in the MP sold for 200K, if the storage is lock and no way to open, then you miss that shard forever. heard they show up 4 times in all the month. so 4 shards right there, 4 guaranties rares. (if you open them and get crap, more reasons to abandon the game XD )
If you are in a hurry to upgrade your champions to LVL 60, like me, the pit is also good, (not upgraded), as you can put 4 characters to gain levels as you sleep or what not.
and last is to invest in the gem mine, again, if you really like the game... so panning to stay to get that reward back in 100 days for P2W players but like 180 for F2P games (half a year) as i am including the time you probably pass gathering the gems to unlock it and wont miss any by miss-clicking to open keeps that are closed (200 gem down the drain on Magic Keep like happen to me T_T not included misc-clicking refresh arena and refreshing MP because the button is strategically placed in the same place you usually click Cancel on any operative system window) in total have miss like 250 gems slipping in the banana peels in your path. and the reason i gave up on the Mine and opening MP slots instead)
On a personal note, and its only my opinion so don't take it with any relevance at all, I am only in my 1st weeks and i am tired with the grinding to only level a single character to 60, utterly bored and feeling i am not going anywhere with the very slow progress I do daily, but that is the burden of F2P games I guess...
Long story short, In my humble opinion, if you are pay to win (P2W) and have money to spare , then invest first on the gem mine, MP storage and pit, in that order. thanks for reading!

so 200k for the blue shards is considered a good deal? hmm. i just buy 1 green shard a day for the daily quest.
IDK... I am still noob, you tell me please. I consider any ancient shard is a good investment as (IF YOU ARE EXTREMELY LUCKY) you may get a GOOD legendary... because that is the odds, you may get crappy legendary as well or some that are just plain ugly you wont want to show your friends, (like the matron Ork with fly flying all around impaling she smells like poop and only place bombs , or the St Patrick meme monster... BTW should he be a Dwarf and not a Ogre?)
I also buy green shard, ALL OF THEM, because again if you are EXTREMELY LUCKY you may get a GOOD rare. The More The Better when it comes to mystery shards, also you can use them all in the summoning events to get some crap that may help you.

Is saving up the 800 gems to unlock all masteries a good use?
Think maybe only if you p2w, as save a lot of time you can invest on leveling up characters. you know how much energy you lose in those dungeons... and you will have to fight solo as the scrolls are given randomly on each character. Energy is very restrictive in this game. as you know
if you are F2p it wont be a good idea, because there other things you better invest the gems. like we discuss here, MP slots, fight pit places and the gem mine. F2P players got to have the patience of the gods! as everything will come in very very slow and every gem counts.honestly its best early on to save gems and pay for your first mastery, forget the mine, arena etc, mino 15 has to be done for uns to be scroll/energy efficient and this is very difficult to without at least one player mastered, also having the masteries on one player will give you clan boss rewards from high chest daily- more gem rewards, allow you to clear brutal earlier in game- gems/gear/shards, harder quests then achieved, mine takes ages to recover gems early on and they are premium at the start.
once you have 2 champs fully mastered, mino 15 is easily done and the champs you run with them level far quicker, then unlock mine and then arena/storage, far quicker to do it this wayI have done very little on masteries so far, just tier 2. I can farm brutal 12.3 or 12.6 with 60 elhain and 3 food.
I have 6* Elhain 60 Zelotah 60 Apocathery 49 (on way to 60)
50 Adriel, Occult Brawler, Skullcrusher, Shaman (throwaway at this point I guess)
40 Frostbringer, Crimson Helm, Whisper, Gorgorab, High Khatun, Seeker, Hordin, Grizzled Jarl, Fellhound, Berserker (garbage), Valla (garbage), Valerie, Jizoh
Market slots dont make sense to me, or sparring pit (i have 1 slot level 1), and level 1 gem mine
I did invest in the mine first thing before training slots. Never regretted it, did the upgrade to lvl 3 as well and then openend all slots (but only to lvl 1)
I invested 800 gems for masteries for my Kael which was my first 60. It really helped me in maximizing my training for 12-3 or 12-6 and the Clan Bosses.
If you plan on playing the game long term, you want to maximize your Market slots and maximize the Mine.
You shouldn't use gems for expanding your Champion slots.
Don't buy ancient shards until there is an event which gives you bonus for them.

No! Buy every ancient shard you see - and save them up for the event. There is no need to open a shard immediately after buying it. Shards are one of the very few things in this game that have no storage limit.

I think he meant don't spend gems on shards, do buy them for silver in the market. That would be my recommendation as well.
