The in-game ratings can be a good first clue if a champ is decent (as long as it has a lot of ratings, say 1k+)

1200 bazaar coins for a blue shard. I have to win 400 individual battles in team. The refresh rate is 15 minutes and I'm getting people 10x my group power. Could take a week if I'm lucky to get one ancient shard and for repeat champions happening.

Idc if it's a crap rare. I want new ones to train and play around with. With hundreds of races I would think tht possible. 

But to answer your question more specifically, there aren't any rares that are must haves. They can be swapped with epics or legendary champs ... You can put duplicate Champions within the Faction Guardians section of the Guardian Ring, and they'll grant stats of all Champions of a specific Rarity within a Faction!
