One thing I'm not sure about, but I have a sneaking suspicion - if you have gear autosells on, and it sells the item, it won't count as having been obtained. So, any 5* mythical items will simply be autosold usually, since most people just autosell 5*.
Personally I've been on the "get one mythical boot" mission for at least two fusions, which means at least 360 non-Spider dungeon runs. There's a 5% chance of one dropping, and six item slots to choose from, so, simplistically, my odds of getting a drop are 0.83%, which means after 360 runs, the odds of not getting one are, ironically, about 5%. Now, on the other hand, if the autosell on the 5* items meant they don't count, then it would instead be about 38%, which is definitely reasonable.

Yes, turn off auto sell.

Auto sell definitely appears to make it not work.
