On topic, even if you had left it running till morning, you still would have lost, because you'd hit the turn count limit of 1500.

The same rule applies everywhere else in the game, Dungeons, Doom Tower, Clanboss... Especially in DT it can be an issue, if you have too much healers and revivers and not enough damage, it can drag on. At, I believe, 1300-1400 turns it'll start showing up on the screen, and that's your cue, either finish it fast or give up and try something else.
