Yes as absurd as it seems that's the case. With only one stat they increase survivability and damage. Atm their damage is not lower than attacker's and they have double survivability.
Then understand what you want, try to play with three tanks and one heal, you'll understand how much more effective it is than an attacker's team

Sure, Look at Executioner
Executioner is a Defense Champion.
Executioner A1 deals damage based on Attack
If you was to put an Increase Atk Buff, Executioner A1 would do more damage.
Thus, the answer to your question is yes!
It is possible for a Defense Champion to do more Damage with an Increase Attack Buff.
It just depends on the hero.

the weird thing is that those champions still receive Atk status from ascend
