Like Blas said it gives more xp but personally rather use pearls for pardon reduction or rum consumption. And reducing build times on fleet and armada units. 

Thank you I was hoping it was for crew that you already had and that every time you sent them into battle they would get bonus for future battles. I do like using pearls for the discovery upgrade. and I like the one for haven guard recovery speed.
