I have a similar, but unrelated problem with training troops. However, I didn't experience what you describe.

Smells like a client problem to me, which means that it might be connected to Flash/browser/OS version. Can you, please,

1. try under a different browser? and
2. write which browser and its version, under which OS (and version), and under which version of Flash are you running the game?

Crowbar - may be helpful for Plarium to publish which version of Flash is required?

On a similar note sliders used in the tavern - can use them but when the purchase tab is clicked the sliders return to  one unit and only one unit can be purchased. Intermittent though so kind of wierd.

The purpose of my question was to give the devs the info to try to recreate the problem. Without that, they can only attempt to fix it blindly, which is rarely successful.

Yes, that's the "similar, but unrelated problem with training troops" that I've mentioned above. It doesn't always drop to one, but it does drop. I've reported it already.
