I must be doing something wrong. I always save and merge five eggs at a time but the last few levels to meet the wildlife score requirement takes days of grinding and it's making the game not fun anymore. I've currently been stuck at level 81 for a week. So is there something I'm missing or am I stuck in wood and beehive harvesting hell?

Here are some tips to boost your feather count and make progress faster:
Harvest Honey Trees/Apiaries
Get your critters to harvest honey trees and apiaries. Merging honeycomb and honey pots eventually gives coins, baskets, or eggs. The honey stand at the end gives coins, baskets, and eggs. Sell baskets for coins and buy more eggs to keep going.
Buy Sturdy Tradesman Trunks
Purchase these in the store (you’ll need wood). Merge in fives to stage 2 to get vegetable patches, molehills, and chests. Merge vegetable patches for the Pumpkin Patch Masterpiece, which gives lots of Mystery Mammal Eggs.
Merge Stars from Puzzles
Merge stars you win in groups of five for bonuses. Tap them before merging for occasional swan eggs. Once merged to a Peerless Star, you can tap it seven times for more swan eggs and nests.
Participate in Events
Events often reward eggs and critters - take advantage of them.
Complete Game Masterpieces
All masterpieces give eggs of different types. They’re worth investing time in for the rewards.
Merge Eggs in Groups of Five
Always merge in fives when possible - this gives 2 critters per merge instead of 1.
Merge Critters at Stage 4
Merge critters once they reach stage 4 to get magnificent nests. Eggs from these nests produce higher-level critters with more feathers.
