🏔️🏞️ The Mesa Verde Facility is tucked away in a hidden canyon within the Peruvian Andes. Its creators were hoping that out of sight meant out of mind, but that’s been far from the case. As one of the critical extraction points of Phloranium, a sought-after mineral with military and Mech-building applications, the existence of the facility has been a power struggle from the start. The government refused one company a monopoly over the mine and arranged for it to be shared between several corporations in a unique alliance.
It didn’t take long for the alliance to start crumbling. It started off with lawsuits. Then it escalated to sabotage. The final nail in the coffin came when Archilec, a “neutral” organization that had been specifically created to mediate and prevent conflict, made a play for the facility themselves. Following fears that this conflict would escalate and spread, Mesa Verde was shut down. It has never been reopened.
It’s difficult to know who now owns the Mesa Verde Facility. At least three companies have ongoing lawsuits that claim they are entitled to it. Dismayed and disheartened by their failed initiative, the local government handed responsibility to the Mech Arena League in the interim. It’s leased out as an Arena to prevent any real fights from breaking out, although some Pilots find it difficult to tell the difference. Vendettas between corporations have a habit of becoming personal in the Arena, but it’s better than an all-out war.
That’s why the Mesa Verde Facility has one of the highest levels of security. All three of the corporations with open lawsuits, Archilec, Silva Industries, and Matsumech, have been accused of attempting hostile takeovers. Luckily, none have succeeded yet. It is only a matter of time, though. Someone will outsmart, outspend, or outmaneuver the competition. But whoever ends up on top will inherit a sad legacy. The Mesa Verde Facility could have marked a new path to peace and collaboration. Instead, it became another battleground.
