I get the problem you're trying to solve, but the solution creates a bigger disparity in another problem - i.e. when mid level squads face squads with maxed out gear. If a 4 and 5 star mech squad faces a purple star mech squad then the cap on the pilots makes an already mismatched engagement even worse.

By the way, of all matchmaking issues I've seen, the one you've described is very rare. Your experience might be different of course.
