Genuine or cheaper clone for diagnostics?

I need a professional diagnostic scanner for daily workshop use and found several genuine devices at ECUTools The price difference compared with clones is considerable, so I’m wondering whether the original equipment is really necessary for routine diagnostics and ECU programming. What problems can occur with cheaper alternatives?

A clone may handle basic reading and clearing of errors, but ECU programming is a different matter. Unstable communication, outdated firmware or incorrect voltage control can interrupt the writing process and leave the control unit unusable. Genuine equipment also provides official updates, technical support and more predictable compatibility with current software. For occasional personal diagnostics a basic adapter may be enough, but for paid workshop work an original tool is generally the safer investment.
