By training just one troop type you can focus on knowledge and hero/shamen skills and gear for that troop type, this will make your troops far stronger than simply training a large number of troops. 

Though this undoubtably has merits, it also  means  that you will be weaker against players with troops that are strongest against the troops you chose to specialise in.

I guess so. I know when I started I used to train equal amounts of all troop types but I found for attacks it was often better to have just one troop type.

Since there is no limit on how many of your own troops you can have in your town I could train all troop types but one use one troop type for town attacks.

Yes you could do as you say but bear in mind these troops will be weaker and therefore, should your town be attacked, they will be more easily defeated. Depending on how many of those troops you have it could cost you and your clan heavily during competitions.

That’s why there are hero sets,if you’re maxed out with hero you can set your skills to that troop type with enemy buffs and all troop maxxed out.it will make you stronger and your enemy weak, even if your troop type is week against there troop type. For example I was attacked by a larger town and they only killed t-1 and very few t-2 and I killed 500k of there t-5 and t-6 killers and I have cavs their week against killers.Hope I didn’t confuse anyone.🤪
