I found it's always best to wait till you have all ledgendary materials befor making your hero gear . that way you will be getting the best of the bonuses they provide . best for defence is Lynx gear and the best for offence is saracen's gear for people who don't have a stronghold to make special gear  . building gear and  learning gear go a long way with helping reduce the time it takes for upgrading . and for boosting processes wait till boost on boosts is on it helps greatly too .
