Behind Battle Calculation ... your Take

Although the exact algorithms behind PvP battle calculations are a black box, most of us have a general sense as to how these are handled, although everyone might see this slightly differently.

How are defensive units matched to offensive ones?

  • By their category (light, heavy, …)?

  • By their numbers, either unit count or strength?

  • How are they distributed?

  • If a cavalry-heavy offence runs into a balanced defence, how many cavs are matched against which defensive units / unit categories? Is it a percentage value matching the number and strength of defensive forces?

  • Or would the offensive cavs be matched to defensive cavalry 1:1 with a (possible) overflow assigned to other unit types?

  • Are offensive units matched to defensive contingents or vice versa? Or both?

  • And are they first matched by type (Agemas, Carthaginians, …) and then by category (cav, phalanx, …)?

I have been keeping track of PvP battle results for the past few months and am getting a feel of how this is calculated, but would be very interested to hear what others have to say about this, especially since I only have been playing for about 18 months and other players have been around for much longer.

Cheers
P.

I just want to second the difficult questions laid out in the above post. I have been playing for even less time, just over 6 months, and have read just about EVERYTHING I could but still can't get a clear perspective on how to navigate my way through PP most effectively. Is it better to throw numerous small waves to try and limit your losses or to try and over power the opposing force with sheer numbers, for example????

Well that is the biggest nagging querry on my mind the list of perplexities that The Irate Penguin listed above also rattle around in my head each and every time I try to steer my way through any but the most simply laid out PP.

1 PVP equals the values around 35 offense or defense with an error of +-5. If you kill units worth of 350 defense in base value, you would get 10 pvp. Agreements and bonuses are ignored.

This might very well be, but how do we define "kill"? :-). In a pitched battle, which units are pitted against which? How many cavs will be battling opposing mounted units and how many will need to engage the deadly archers? How many Thorakites will be battling heavy infantry at a disadvantage rather than engaging other phalanx units on their own terms? How many Mounted Peltast will need to defend against light infantry instead of engaging enemy phalanx and cavalry, for which they are so much better equipped?

Cheers

Good evening fightclubfan:

I am, as you, constantly searching for ways to optimise my PP tactics. Regrettably, this thread is about more basic PvP mechanics so it would IMO be best if you posted your very legítimate concern on one of the threads related to Persian Position tactics.

Cheers

Battle losses are calculated on individual units by opposite army percentages on the combined strength of both the armies. Try to test it out for yourself in emporia. Stating the whole thing here with methods i wont do, and you also should not. Plarium may change these algorithms once it knows that the players do understand it like they did with the persian positions.

Indeed, I have been doing so for some time and have around 150 battles catalogued. Was simply interested in how other players see this, especially because IMO many seem to more or less ignore varying defensive strengths and troop count by type (cav, phalanx, ...) when selecting their battle contingients.

That is because they believe they can replenish their losses by the year end's bonus in hand, so they calculate more harder there :)
