I do not normally take screen shots of events before I undertake them!

Even I am not that paranoid ;)

I ran the auto conquest feature and I have a concrete recollection of running it until i maxed out the reward (3 million). 

I also remember that event reward included epic bonds, which is primary driver for bothering to max out.

Then when event closed, max reward had been reset at 1.6 million and no epic bonds (no recollection of having seen that before for G XP event?).

So no I cannot prove it but I know it was changed

Ares, it's possible that there were two very similar tournaments, but with different balances and requirements. For instance, at the moment, there are the following Guardians' tournaments in the game: 

In the event tab they look very similar, but, actually, these are different tournaments with different balances. One of them includes a Holy Bond for the collected 7500K points and another one doesn't have a Holy Bond in rewards. They also have different duration but they are running simultaneously and XPs earned by your Guardians are being calculated in both tournaments. 

I think it may explain the situation that you faced.
