This may be a dumb question - but how do so many people get huge shields on their champions at the beginning of arena fights? Is it an item set? It doesn't seem like a champion ability because I've Appvn seen so many teams have it. Any help would be great.

You can use a Shield set.
A Shield set is a 4 piece gear set which can be acquired from Fire Knight Dungeon or Market.
The Shield set puts a Shield on all your heroes at the beginning of the fight.
It only lasts for 3 turns.
Also keep in mind that a Shield Set adds a shield according to 30% of the HP of the champion who wears it. It is pointless to put a shield set on a low-HP champion.
Also, the shield set should be good enough, with appropriate stats and sub-statis, preferably those with xp%, because you are deprived of two other possible set bonuses by wearing a Shield Set.
Therefore, for maximum effect, the Shield Set should be placed on a champion with a high base HP, and you should additionally try to increase its maximum HP by selecting items with base and sub-stats with xp%.
