I did NM campaign with Dreng. He's exactly the right type of champion. Can even survive a peril hit in 12-7.
Do you have him in a regen set with enough speed and resistance? If not, you need to pair him with a sustain healer. Not sure if apothecary can do the job. Probably if he's fast enough.
Tomb Lord is actually pretty similar to Dreng, as he is tanky and outputs a lot of poisons. I don't think you gain a lot by pairing them up.

~160 RES and 205+ speed so you can take 2 turns before waves.
