🎿❄️ The phenomenon of Mech Arena has become an unavoidable nuisance. It’s impossible now to walk out the door without seeing its bombastic influence everywhere. We are overwhelmed by its so-called “Pilots” trying to sell us the latest cybernetic enhancements. You cannot sit down for a drink in a bar without the sound of shredding steel blowing out your eardrums from the livestreamed match. Even children are turning away from traditional sports, such as football, and are instead wearing Pilot jerseys. But one competition remained a bastion of real sport: the Global Winter Games. Now they’re coming to ruin that too.

The Global Winter Games committee has finally caved, and allowed this pathetic excuse for a sport into the midst of real athleticism. For the first time ever, Mech Sports will be represented on this hallowed stage in Zakopane. With their unwieldy robots and their terrifyingly large guns, they’re promising to explode onto our screens and deliver high-octane matches. But their pursuit of the Golden Cup has unfortunately come at the cost of other real disciplines. 

It appears some of the “athletes” are also taking the fight off the battlefield and into their own hands. Already, rumors of sabotage are rife, despite the added pressure of representing their own countries. Between all the Pilots competing, there are 17 active lawsuits and several alleged criminals in their midst. I would be remiss to mention a few of the arguably decent role models among the participating Pilots. Stefania Shevchenko of Myrina Aerospace is one of the sponsors for the sport and is a worthy ambassador. But her fellow campaigners responsible for inflicting this upon us, Targe and Boar, have been nothing short of insufferable. In the interest of complete transparency, both offered me large sums of money in exchange for a positive opinion piece. Boar even wanted me to plug his multiple bestselling memoirs. I, as a journalist with integrity, refused.

Are these really the people we want to record in history? To honor on a world-wide level? To crown as victors? I ask you reader, no - I beg you, not to be drawn in by flashy plays and adrenaline-fuelled action. Only time will tell if the Pilots will be able to show true professionalism and sportsmanship. Only they can determine their legacy.
