Yeah,  as  far  as  I  can  tell  you  have  to  buy  those  things.

The  good  news  is  that  you  get  like  1,000  or  something  like  that  for  99¢  US  so  it's  really  not  that  bad.

Warning  though  -  if  you  upgrade  implants  you  lose  the  upgrades  if  you  switch  them  out  from  one  pilot  to  another . Unless,  that  is,  you  spend  some  purple  sperm  on  them  (I  have  no  idea  what  they  call  those  things)  to  retain  either  30%  of  your  upgrades  or  100%  . 

And  it  also  costs  A-coins  too  do  that .
