Is Borrow Beam OP? Well, I tried it myself...

Borrow beam. Bruh.

It's so OP.

That there was my previous statement. A lot of people indeed agreed with my sentiment, that this new weapon is incredibly strong, more so than it should be.

However, there was also notice that it might not be as OP as expected, due to the one-and-done firing mechanic, plus charge up time.

Now, thanks to Plarium's surprising generosity - I was indeed quite shocked when I saw the ECR - I actually got my hands on this little bugger, and got the opportunity to test it out.

Now, unfortunately I can't speak for it's true power, as this weapon's damage relies heavily on implants. I did somehow luckily get the legendary mag implant the next day funnily enough..

Still, it has high damage, alright range and shield peirce.

I put it on surge, as that's the only 24 energy scout I have currently, and only with an albeit maxed epic pilot. And the performance was... Alright?

Maybe I'm underselling it a little, it's was definitely an improvement over my ember 12s before, but in something like a 5v5, where I tested it most, I'd typically only get a handful of kills before dying to bots. Part of the issue was due to surge's various nerfs, of which I will not complain, as without the fire rate and or damage implant I couldn't always kill things before my ability ran out.

Surge typically is a very aggressive mech and so, in my experience, in 'fair' lobbies, dies pretty fast.

The strongest thing I've found about BB is not actually the damage, but the RANGE.

A few times I've had a sweaty, fully maxed revoker eclipse chasing me down.

The range advantage simply means I can kill or almost kill them before they get close, or dash away if they are already, given they also typically just run at you in a straight line.

The other thing I've found quite strong is actually the one-and-done firing mechanic..

Simply because of surge V surge, I think you get what I mean. Revoker VS BB, I keep firing, they don't. Same applies to Deathwalker when returning, tho I only have 20 energy and so cannot use dual 12s to experience that yet.

Speaking of, I don't know whether to try it out on blockhorn or DW first? They're both the same rank, if you bothered to read this far, which do you suggest? :3

So, it's OP? Yes, I'd say by the definition it is more powerful than it should or needs to be, but it's not quite as bad as I feared, or least for now..

Tho I will say that certainly doesn't stop bots from rm -rf'ing you instantly from across the map, especially in FFA...

Feels like a bit of vindication to see someone say burrow beam feels OP to use

But I'll be checking how widely used it is

Tbh it's a lot rarer right now than I expected, even in hangar showdown.

Idk if its made it to the flash deals yet, which is where most people wait to buy it ig

Ok also it turns out I didn't notice the +50% damage modifier.

So actually it might not be that good for me rn 😅

Thanks for your feedback on the Burrow Beams, we will pass it on to our devs 👍

That's something I gotta look out for when checking usage stats I hadn't accounted for

Nice analysis. I also got it from the ECR, and my opinion so far is that there are 2 kinds of players that can use it effectively - pros and bots :-). My specific problem is the difficulty in maintaining aim while the enemy is moving around. I usually use minimal aim assist because with my other weapons I like the option of hitting the ground (missiles) or the corners of hitboxes of partly hidden mechs (assault weapons). With burrow beam and minimal aim assist I flail around like those dancing air balloons you see in front of some establishments.

For starters I put it on my rank 5 eclipse, and one thing that is helping me is to pair it with a gemini 6. The gemini gives a damage boost and slows the opponent down, which makes up a bit for my lack of skill. Another option might be to use a stasis beam (on a 20-cap mech) but I've not tried that yet.

And I know I can change my aim assist settings but I'm really poor at changing those settings mid game to suit my active mech, so I typically just keep aim assist off.

I've got burrow beam 8 with the crate rush event. I found wide target assist is better with this weapon. If they tweaked minimal aim assist to make all weapons target the point your reticule is over it would probably work a lot better with burrow beam and many other weapon. Or if they added another option with that tweak.

Anyways how strong does burrow beam feel? On most maps? Good. And on the rest? It's arguably unfair.

The weapon has two drawbacks in that it takes a second to charge up and it fires continuously until empty.

Like Pog says, this weapon thrives with implants for its damage. Though I wouldn't say it relies heavily on them, not before mods at least. It already feels quite good against them too since it can partially bypass shields. But with the right mech and right implants you become a killing machine. I only have mako (basic pilot) and basic implants for damage and fire rate and I'm frequently getting killstreak awards like dominating, unstoppable, rampage and godlike. 5,7,9 and 10 kills respectively.

This weapon is maybe not the best for close quarters combat or tight maps with lots of structures. There are definitely better weapons for it. But it can still put in work. If you catch your opponent out in the open within 80 meters it's over for them. I think the only weapon that's worked as reliably against enemies out in the open that isn't a guided weapon is pre-mods EM rifle. Or perhaps railgun too. But that's it. And they do have greater range but they require a lot more skill to use.

But where burrow beam really shines is where you have enemies lined up. You can get godlike without this happening, but once you've on a map with tight corridors burrow beam makes your enemies drop like flies.

It also really benefits from being the one weapon where you don't have to worry about bots or teammates getting in your way at all. In fact it lets you use them scrap shields while you fire BOTH beams into the opponent.

The best mechs to use it with I think is tanks, preferably mechs with personal shields or deathwalker or parasite, and eclipse. Followed by Panther and Aegis. Though panther and aegis can also be good for countering other burrows. Just Aegis isn't super mobile behind a dome shield. The mech I have it on currently is sentinel, which I think is maybe the worst of the best options. And I consistently get big killstreaks using that. I can only imagine it on a mech that uses it better still that may allow players to get more aggressive.

I think the weapon is crazy OP. They gave it drawbacks to "balance" it but it just isn't enough. It's not the damage, it's not the range. It's the combination of damage and range that makes burrow beam overtuned. It outperforms mid range brawling weapons in DPS in addition to being able to tunnel through mechs. It's way overtuned. Weapons like this need to be religated to being support weapons. A weapon that can weaken the enemy team so your teammates can finish them off. And I should only be able to get godlike on maps like acropolis with tight, open corridors.

I don't know if it was meant to do this, but I got killed in a showdown match by this weapon even thou it never touched me. It was close, I could see the 2 beams next to me, and I died.

Actually yeah I do think that it has a wider damage spread than the animation would imply. Not sure if that's lag or what. It kills insanely fast so it could be lag but I'm not sure

Yeah they probably hit you a little bit and ping typically favours the shooter, happens with every weapon unfortunately.

Imagine if it could tunnel through walls lmao...

I have the 8 paired with an overdriver 10 on Parasite. I find it harder to aim and track enemies. Feels like thrre is no assist and the animation is harder to follow whether its actually hitting the mech. I watch for the damage numbers flying off. In that regard, I'd prefer the overdriver. I only have 1 implant for it. The idea is to eventually rank the Parasite and get a 12, ditch the overdriver.

When opponents have dual burrow beams, it's pretty much run for your life. You really can't allow any exposure to it.
