It's really up to you. I think the gem mine is useless really, I would rather purchase 22 ancient shards than upgrade the gem mine 3 times. which I think is comparatively the same in price. But it depends what kind of player you are.
Are you looking for hits of disappointment and dopamine? Spend gems always on ancient shard packs and energy refills like me.

F2p player here as well and Surely the answer is the Mine 
1-as f2p player gems will be harder to come later in game . in early stages there are many doable challenges and missions with gem reward so you first priority is to secure your gem income .. 15 daily from mine + 10 from daily quest is not bad considering being f2p . it took me 26 days since i started playing to fully upgrade the mine
2- Mine can open sparing pit but the pit cant open mine ;)
3- pit is not that immensely useful due to the fact that you have to click to upgrade to next level ..so not that continues xp points while you are busy working or sleeping . Don't calculate it like if 1000 xp points per hour then it is 24000 per day which is really nice .
after i fully upgraded my mine to lv 3 . i bought another sparing pit which i somehow regret right now . after that i save my gems and buy the 11 ancient pack for 900 gems ..if it is upgrading event and i have gem want to spend i spend them on 3 days xp ticket -- not energy refill -- as it is more worthy

F2p, an still finishing most events succesfully:
1. Upgrade the mine!
2. Save up your gems until a summoning Event (900 gems for 11 blue shards) or a lvl-up event (270 gems for 3 days douple exp/40 gems per Nrg-refill) shows up. That way you, as patient F2P-gamer, can finish most of the events the impatient or thoughtless people complain about.
- finishing those events gives you skilltomes (as f2p the events are your best source of those, until you can kill brutal clanbossess)
3. Ignore the sparring pit (which is near useless for anybody that has a job or needs to sleep.)

The mine, of course, number 1. The sparring pits are not that important, i would rather gather 800 for unlocking heroes Masteries next. 🤗

If you just started, use your first 800 gems to upgrade all masteries of your farmer. Don't buy refills, you should have plenty of energy to keep you busy

I think I'm the only one that thinks 800 gems on Kael as your starter is BY FAR the best use of gems. I started an alt account, and you rack up gems so fast. In the beginning you aren't anywhere near Mino15. The benefits of focusing on getting Kael to 60, doing Masteries, and not wasting energy on stupid missions that aren't going anywhere are TREMENDOUS. F2P and silver1 arena in <10 days. Kael plus the farmable heroes. Struck out on the blue shards too. Oh well.

My purpose for writing this post is to find out if anyone has a good use for gems other than boosts.
I'd love to be able to boost and pile up loot, but I just don't have the time. I feel like gems became pointless as soon as I unlocked the 5th builder. (which btw, spends way too much time sleeping later in game) oreotv

I actually need to get the mine but the sparring pit could be immensely beneficial. The best purpose I'm torn is that you only get five gems in step with day from the mine and it might take 100 days to recoup the cost SHAREit while the sparring Appvn pit is immediately beneficial.
