Actually, I'm playing 2nd division. I've had the AI be forced to take over my teammate almost every other day lately (its easily recognizable if you know what to look for).
As for the rewards, its not so much about hte rewards - exactly - as trying to get rid of the frustration and anger found during a loss. That's what the biggest difference for me was with the revamp of the tournament and Hanger Showdown. I didn't find myself raging after a loss in tournament. As I thought about the reasons, it dawned on me that a lot of it was because I was still advancing towards my goal, even in a loss (in the case of tournaments, that goal was A-Coins). To contrast, with Hanger Showdown, my goal is to achieve a certain number of points so I can get the reward I've set for my goal. But the system is set up for a "feast or famine" thing where you get points for wins, and pretty much nothing for a loss. And if you have a bad parter or one who quits in the middle, you really get 0. This leads to rage quiting - not something any game should want.
They had a great thing with the first revamp of the tournament and based on these tweeks, I'm afraid they don't truely understand what it is that made it great. Or possibly more importantly, just what it is that can keep players from playing certain modes of the game, like Hanger Showdown. If you can't make some kind of reasonable progress towards your goal in a loss, you're going to quit as soon as things start to look bad because you will be wasting your time otherwise. When a win gets you 111 of something and a loss gets you 6, that's too big of a gap to be meaningful.
Yes, this is a competitive game. Players should want to win. But more than that, it should be a fun game where players want to play and play well, even in a loss. Rewards and advancement are a huge, massive motivation for players to do both. Right now, and with these tweeks to tournament, the game is doubling down on just winning. If you don't get premium currency in a loss, you can't advance. And they have pretty much stated that certain squad power levels are not expected to achieve Grand Master, which means that those with said squad power levels are expected to lose more than they win - by a lot.
I don't want free rewards, but I don't want the game to be ONLY about winning. Putting A-Coins (THE premium currency in the game) as something you can only achieve through winning is doing exactly that, making the game be ONLY about winning.
