Lore: Frost Rink

❄️🌬️ It’s time to explore the history of another Arena - Frost Rink! Read the full lore about this snowy map below.

The Frost Rink Arena is another stadium that’s been built solely for the Global Winter Games. Designing a map from scratch, rather than repurposing existing structures, allowed for greater flexibility and the Mech Arena League were keen to involve fans in the creative process. They decided to host a competition, to determine which lucky Mech would feature in a starring role. But the League underestimated the passion of their fanbase. Thousands of people tuned into the livestream announcing the contest and left determined to win - at any cost.

The committee for the Global Winter Games wanted the fans to decide which Mech would be commemorated as a giant inflatable sculpture in the middle of the Frost Rink Arena. Various groups mobilised to shoot their favorites to the top of the leaderboard, but none were as enthusiastic as the Lancer fans. Known online as ‘Lancelots’, the group was determined to share their love with the world. There was no way they were going to let this opportunity escape them. One member even offered to hack the votes to secure the win, but ultimately it was unnecessary.

A core group of Lancer fans immediately began to put the word out: they needed to mobilize and establish votes for the Lancer inflatable in the Frost Rink Arena. Fast. A surge of users logged in at once, causing the committee voting website to crash. Finally, after some last-minute tech support, the fans were able to have their say. The results were not surprising. Even though a few other groups rallied to counter the Lancelots, they simply did not have the numbers, or the ferocity. Lancer earned its landslide victory, but the fans didn’t stop there.

Bolstered by their win, Lancelot fans campaigned for more visibility. They started a petition, which garnered thousands of signatures, to rename the Frost Rink Arena as a homage to the Scout. Their suggestion of ‘Lancer’s Lot’ unfortunately did not make the cut. Once their emails stopped being replied to, the group switched to bombarding the MAL with handwritten pleas. One of the Arena designers suggested appeasing them with an auction for the inflatable sculpture after the event, but his suggestion was quickly dismissed over fears of inciting a riot.
