Tournament Pros, Cons, and maybe solutions?
I was just going to reply to one of the many, "the tournament is terrible, sinful, made me get a divorce, made me bald, etc." posts but I over did it, so, I decided to make a new post. Enjoy (...or not)!
---------------------------
Plarium needs to be doing some more tweaking of the tournaments. What I see (both good and bad):
The Pros
- Amount of attempts is fair.
- Rewards are fair (WHEN you receive them; Check Cons)
- No SP dropping
- People are playing at their optimal skill level (or it seems)
The Cons
- It takes 3/4 of the tournament season for SP matching to stabilize. Up till the last few weeks of tournament, the SP gap is huge. 10-12k gap is outrageous. Even during the last few weeks of the season, you will most likely run into someone who's 30% higher SP than you.
- Having the ability to form team makes it unfair to the MAJORITY of people who do not. This is especially noticable when the teams formed (especially in late Master and Grandmaster) are averaging 18k+ SP. It also makes some members of the non-premade team members leave, giving even more of an advantage to the premade team.
- Not receiving some sort of acoin reward in CPC or 5v5 after you lost but placed 1st-2nd place for your tem is very disheartening. The fact that you tried your best (and even at times with teammates leaving), you are basically told, "Too bad, so sad." You feel this pain even more when going up against a premade.
- The "killing stealing" power is strong especially in FFA tournaments with the bots. Maybe they should do more "kill stealing" to help teammates out during regular play? Or not stopping just outside of a control point circle of influence when it could have won the game? Or, blocks you from a kill shot, regular shots, or just moving forward.? Or or...you get it.
- The bots. Oh, the bots....need I say more on this?
Possible Solutions?
- Instead of dropping by bracket at the beginning of every season (i.e. from GM to Master), maybe drop rank by the calculation of win/loss ratio? Someone who has >= 90% win rate would stay in the same rank and bracket, where, someone who is between 60-75% win rate drop a rank (i.e. from GM2 to GM3 or GM3 to M1), and anyone below 60% drops a bracket. You can call this seeding (like in sports).
- REMOVE the ability to form premades! I can't stress how awful this idea is to have it in the tournament. The majority of us are not in premades (and/or want to form premades). Please remove this. Or, at least only allow premades to be form at certain bracket and rank (i.e GM1 and above only).
- Bring back (at least a little) acoin rewards for the losing side so that we do not feel like we just got slapped in the face after sweating it out.
- Make kill credits earned through the amount of damge done but set an amount of time between damaging a target to alleviate possible exploits like damage farming (i.e. moving from one target to another while doing as much damage as possible). Examples: Player did 80% damage to a target and another mech comes along and kills it, the player would still get the kill. But, if the player did 80% of the damage and stops for 2 seconds, the target becomes neutral and whoever kills it gets the credit.
- Maybe lower the mod levels on bots? Even though the bot's AI mechanics are on par, if not better, than cheating software such as aimbots or wall hacks, at least lower the mod levels?
-----------------------------------
I am more than certain that if you made any of the changes mentioned, the majority of your Mech Arena community base who does tournament will praise you!
