OLD SCHOOL MODE

So please thumbs up here if you think that there should be a new mode implemented apart from our normal Modes which are Control Points Clash, Deathmatch, Tournament, Hangar Showdown. The name could be whatever, but lets call it Old School.

The mode would allow you to play with only common, uncommon and rare weapons, mechs, implants and NO mods (i think.. if only on pink mechs maybe.. idk but for sure not on all mechs.. ). I think also only rare pilots. Basically NO EPIC or LEGENDARY anything.

Then i assume ideally you could chose CPC or Deathmatch, 1v1, 2v2 or whatever.. but i dont really care which type of game would be available.

I was dreaming about such mode since nearly starting playing 6 months ago.. Somehow there was less SP dropping and i did not see a lot of gemini, savant, quashers in early games, maybe because revoker was the way to go for those who bulldozered whole teams of newbies with Dreadnaughts and Nomads.

Maybe at that point developers didnt give those weapons to the bots or something i really dont know but even 6 months ago the game was cleaner for crazy guided and EMP stuff..

So the whole point is

(1) A lot of old players remember good old days with basic weapons, and nice team play and no one-kill shots, where skill matters more than anything.

(2) players like me who dont want to play nonesense weapons, nonesense mechs, spending half a game frozen, EMPed, and then one shot killed from 170m away. That is not fun, there is no skill. You approach the control point, zephyr appers, you got frozen and killed before making a blink of an eye, add hemlocks and others, multiply by 5 (5 enemies) and you end up in a mess. Where your preferable strategy is hide in cover whole game, pray for your bots to have bettee weapons than enemy bots or watch how your team gets slaughtered by guided weapons from 3 enemy bots, so you dont even see where they firing from. Where is the competition? Where is that old spirit of point and shoot like in Counter Strike, Rainbow 6, Half Life, Cod and other games?

You dont need to change game for that mode, just add mode, restrict use of epic and legendary, mods etc you already have similar functionality in Hangar Showdown (no mods, no pilots etc). Let others play against bots in normal mode, so nothing changes. Call it Archaic mode so its less attractive if you want.. But give us this old school basic simple game please with no nonesenses! Pure challenge and fun. Maybe matchmaking wont feel that crappy if everyone is nearly equal, so you dont even need to care about matchmaking for that..

Most of the persons in the forum might not like it, but I like the idea very much. It will be encouraging to all players, and I have a few questions which I need to ask you.

Will it be effective for all players? (because I had seen a lot of maxed out common/uncommon/rare mechs but most of the common/uncommon/rare weapons are kept in their base rank) Won't the players seem to be 'forced' to upgrade their lower ranked weapon so that they can pair it with their mech which is of a higher rank?

Since the game already pushes you a lot to use only the Legendary stuff, how would players seem to benefit from upgrading lower-tier mechs/weapons? Even with a new game mode, players might have great disparities (pretty obvious because of the current matchmaking algorithm) and that might ruin their experience with the new game mode.

And I have a personal suggestion, we can add epic weapons (not the epic mechs because most of them are way too strong to compare with common/uncommon and rare mechs) because most epic weapons are just improved version of rare weapons (for example take Fusion Cannons and Quantum Guns) and there'd be more options to choose from. Like Hangar Showdown mode, match difficulty and allottment will be decided based on mech stars (to ensure balance in the game-mode)

well i dont have any great thoughts or plan for this to be able to answer questions because its just a suggestion to at least think about it.. we could for sure try to discuss it in detail here.. so its not a raw idea but a well thought out mode.. im really open to any change regarding that if its not going to have stupid overpowered weapons and mechs.. anything would be better than current options.

As for my personal views and preferences there is probably nothing wrong with "some" epic weapons and even mechs but that makes a border line very blurry and open to interpritations.. this way eventually zypher, orion, aegis, fusion mortars and helix racks will join it.. which im not saying is bad..  but im not sure if we should go this path if this mode was ever considered.. but rather have a strickt contrast line which is just NO epic, no legendary.. no wrong interpriations or maybe(s).. very basic old school.. thats my preference. But in reality epic is not that bad.. legendary becomes a proper mess.

As for my thoughts of low level upgrades, indeed i was rather spending acoins and credits on new legendary stuff rather than upgrading old rare/common (although my both common mechs are pink), so everything in blue/green zone is 3-4 stars in my inventory.  I think its a good way to promote some sales for Plarium if people will consider spending on old mechs and weapons as well as new stuff. Those with full hangars and maxed out legendary things might spend on old things if there is nothing else left. I could say that plarium would be able to adjust all mechs/weapons to 3-4 stars as game begins (same as hangar showdown does maxing out to pink), but im not sure its necessary.

I also dont want to overcomplicate this idea because it may become not attractive for implementation and i have no idea what developers think about such idea at all, if i knew their thoughts we could probably go around them and suggest some middle point that would suit them, rather than suggesting something they would reject straight away.. Im very open to how the final product would look like as long as it at least doesnt have legendary stuff in it.. im not so determined about anything else but removing epic would draw a more steady clear line..

Hello! Thanks for taking the time to put together such a detailed suggestion.

We can definitely see the appeal of a Mode focused on lower-rarity Mechs, Weapons, Pilots, and limited additional systems. It would certainly create a different gameplay experience and encourage players to experiment with equipment they may not use as often.

It's worth noting that players are already free to build Hangars around Common, Uncommon, and Rare gear in the existing Game Modes. While Matchmaking may still produce a variety of opponents, it aims to find players of approximately similar strength to keep battles as balanced as possible.

We appreciate you sharing your vision for an "Old School" Mode, and we'll be happy to pass your idea along to the team for consideration. Thanks again for the thoughtful feedback! 👍

people can indeed use rare/uncommon but this will no way insure equal apponents, more likely an sp droppers instead.

But if the mode is an overkill then maybe you could create new chat/interests group options with hashtags, so i could be part of #oldschool community and could select to only join games with this hash tag players :) or host such games. that would still be difficult to control, people would sneak in for fun.. so each community would need an admin player and it would be painful to monitor the breaches etc. Still an alternative!

This actually sounds like a nice workaround that I realize might be possible without new Plarium dependencies. Given what is implemented today, here's one way it might be possible:

1. Create an open clan, or clans. Maybe you can divide them based on the top tier you plan to play. E.g. oldschool-t1, oldschool-t2, etc..

2. Create a discord server. Anyone who is interested in the idea can join that server.

3. Use the discord server to coordinate games, maybe a separate channel corresponding to each clan.

4. When people are organized, hop out of your own clan temporarily, join the oldschool clan, play a team game.

The big disadvantage of this approach is you might get shut out of your regular clan if it fills up behind you, but the alternatives are that you would either have to move to this clan permanently or befriend each other in-game so they can be invited that way. The temp clan approach may be cleaner because it avoids the need for a cross-product of friends in-game (and number of friends is capped).

I has been thinking of this too. My thought was more as a temporary thing, like the tournament. I think it would be fun as a limited event.
