She’s presided over the comings and goings of the resort since its opening, gazing down on visitors from her iconic spaceship. Ruby Rockins featured in all of the resort’s commercials and became a household name. Even when Rocket World had fallen off the cultural radar, people remembered Ruby and dressed up as her for Halloween. With Stefania’s revival of the resort, one journalist decided to dig into the inspiration behind Ruby. No one was prepared for what she uncovered.

You might expect that the mascot of Rocket World was inspired by a famous starlet. Or a model. Or even an astronaut. But after following a trail of rumours, one journalist uncovered the “real” Ruby Rockins. She was Jane Smith, a waitress at a diner who had once served Monsieur Flavadash, the original creator of Rocket World. In an undiscovered draft of his memoir, he wrote that she’d had a faraway look in his eyes – one that looked out to the heavens above. When he asked her why she didn’t just leave, the pair got talking.

Jane Smith, the inspiration for Rocket World’s mascot Ruby Rockins, was tired. She worked three jobs in a deadbeat town to support three younger siblings. When a finely-dressed man walked into her work one day, he had a defeated air about him. She served him coffee, and the pair chatted about life. He revealed that he was Monsieur Flavadash, a luxury hotel magnate. Despite his fame and success, he was miserable. Uninspired. Jane asked him what was stopping him from pursuing another path, and he realised it was himself. He was the only obstacle in his way.

Monsieur Flavadash doubled down on his childhood dream of going to space. He offered Jane Smith the chance to go with him. For years, her dreams had been on hold. All she wanted was to escape her boring life. But she thought of her family. Their goals. Their survival. She explained that she could not leave. But she told him something that stuck with him always: “Don’t stop until you reach the stars.” In her restoration of Nebula Square, Stefania has found that phrase written everywhere. While Jane Smith never made it to the stars, a part of her did.
