In order to forge Shaman and Hero equipment  many seemingly redundant items are required.

Also.

There is now a use for the so called unneeded gems.

Exactly. As you wrote, after a certain level. But below this level, collecting these mats are more difficult as no specific invader is dedicated to them, while farming them from tiles is very unpredictible considering the time it requires.

Btw, as it was mentioned above, with the introduction of precious dust, Plarium has developed the feature of 'upgrading further a legendary sg', therefore theoretically it is just a matter of time we will meet with 'precious crap' and 'ghostly dust' or sg similar.
