Who was vikings?

Not bad article about vikings.

The Vikings were seafaring warriors, raiders, and explorers from modern-day Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Iceland who ventured throughout much of the world during the Viking Age (roughly 793-1000 CE). They traveled as far east as Constantinople and as far west as North America in search of riches to plunder and fertile lands in which to settle. They spoke the Old Norse language, wrote in runes, and practiced their ancestral religion.

The reasons behind Viking raids and settlements during this period are numerous and include population pressures, demographic changes, the high value placed on honor and competitive accomplishments in traditional Germanic society, and a desire to retaliate against the violent incursions of Christianity amongst the Norse and other Germanic peoples that were occurring throughout the Viking Age.

The Vikings are an important part of the study of the indigenous mythology and religion of the Germanic peoples because the vast majority of what we know about these topics comes from Scandinavian and Icelandic poems, treatises, and sagas that were written during or relatively soon after the Viking Age.

Do not forget that the vikings was mainly farmers. to go viking was when they trawled, not only to raid others, but also trading.

but they never used helmets with horn... the few helmets they find with horn, is used of priest at sermonial uses.

I agree, dude! Helmets with horn is useless in battle. Of cause, it seems to me that this is too expensive. Just think how many cows you should kill to craft these helmets. This is an entrenched mindset because of Vagner's opera "The Ring of the Nibelung". Yes, it's just a trade product, but it so bright. And I like it!

As it has been said here they was traders and farmers mainly.

For hundreds of years before the famous attack on Lindesfarne that started the Viking age, they used to do trade.

But then the pope forbid Christians in Europe to trade with heathens. (all that was not Christian, Muslim or Jews)
From that moment they was kind of forced to start raiding more then trading.

And since many of the people who refused to do business with them had changed their swords with a bible, it become extra easy and fun for them to pick their gold and silver, and maybe most important, slaves that they could sell and use.

Olav Trygvason was one of the greatest Norwegian Vikings.
At one time he had 80 cities and villages in Africa that payed taxes to him.
(He never attacked the countries that Rome/The pope controlled..) ;)

Sadly politics forced the Viking kings to pretend that they was Christians in the end, and that by time led to them actually becoming Christians.
And mostly from that moment, the history about Norway is a sad history about people who have been ruled by foreign people up to this day..

Yes, sad but true. But it was a political decision. Otherwise, pagan Norway would have been attacked by crusaders.
