As a single player it doesnt make much difference to move to an edge of water. it is until you bring your friends to the beach party that enemies will take much longer to reach the players near the body of water. Ive seen Order forming their hives this way in medium size peninsulas and they work quite efficiently for war battles.
The most vulnerable players would have to be at the epicenter, while stronger or shielded players will be at the outer edges. For big players whose marches can take up to a minute to attack, it makes it too much of a pain to attack the smaller players, so it works as a deterrence as well.

+1 Luy, it is what we defined based on inputs, as to find the correct locations then. (We're 88 atm, set over two hive, one low level, the other as to access the high tiers nodes & Assaillants). Somewhat complicated, even more if each server has a different lay of land.
At least my server (October-November) compared with the most recent servers (May-June) they are all the same layout

its a little Island for room for 6 (minus the inactive players already there). It has level 3 and 4 near by. and it has another peninsula for extra players to gather around. The nearest invading land is 7 miles away.
