On the capture screen you can see how many ox carts you have available in the top-right of the window.

May I suggest to add a number to every hamlet, so we can identify them? It's not easy to talk always with coords...

Thank you for the suggestions, renowned Lord! Hamlets are being found in the lands of Darkshine in accordance with another way, so I think the coordinates is te proper way of seeking for them.

We really need more information about hamlets holder - friend/enemy/league mark without pointing with mouse.

I've seen the exact opposite.  My offense goes to castle and my def goes back into cata.  

In my opinion, the devs have made attacking hamlets too risk free.  The auto-recall of offense allows players to fire and forget.  Most players who attack others' holdings do not have any holdings of their own.  The risk for the attacker is mainly if they forget their offense after successful attack or if the defender is online and manages to hustle an attack of their own there before the offense can be recalled.  Auto-recall takes that risk away; the exposure of the attacking troops is minimal.  The biggest risk they run is if someone hits their castle while the offense is in the open.

Actually, they're not that bad.  I don't specialize in defense.  I crank out fodder for bgs that I then kill off to win better troops back.  Since I already crank out the fodder, it really isn't that big a deal to have some of it harvesting resources for me while I wait for a bg event to come.  My losses so far have been minimal; 50 nomads total were lost to people attacking during the holiday PvP tournament, and for that loss, I got approx 15000 amulets and 200 sapphires.  

Just my opinion, but here are ways to make hamlets worth it:

1) Don't send anything you can't afford to lose.  There are people who attack and/or steal hamlets just because they can.  I'd like to assume they have league PvP quest or destroy units quest, but who knows for sure?  Send archers or nomads; weaker and inexpensive defense units.  Its usually best to have them finish in an hour or less.

2) During PvP events, its wise to send fewer troops.  You finish faster and lose less when someone blindly nukes it.  As a general rule, if your troops can finish and bring it home in under 30 min, you'll often harvest enough res for it to be worth it (may be different in some neighborhoods and definitely if PvP is up and you're the only hamlet holder, your stuff will be hit...be smart and wait til there are others too so you won't be the only target).

3) You don't need to send a lot of offense to a hamlet unless your intent is to steal.  If a hamlet is showing as unoccupied, a pikeman is strong enough to take it.  If someone else does get there first and your offense loses the fight, only the offense dies; the defense comes home.  Because of this, there is no need to send more than just one offensive unit, probably a pathfinder or seeker (since they move faster) to take an unoccupied hamlet. Naturally, if your intent is to steal or if you are hoping someone gets there first so you can get PvP killing their def, then it makes sense to send more offense units.
