Clicking is a central part of MMORPG. The more clicks the better. This is not a casual game, divide your clicks into months and years.
I agree with your point.
Although there were ways to speed up champs training with money, until they released the champs pass there was no way to simple buy your way to completion. It was the one area of the game that required time and effort and where doing it in the most optimum method would yield a significant advantage (way more progress for your hard work).
Grind and knowing how to get the most result out of your grind are key elements of most MMO's.
I was personally happy that they didn't provide an automated champ rank up solution, although part of me would have loved release from the grind.
I do like the clicking part of champions because it is one of the few competitions where everyone more or less have the same chances to win. Of course, having a champion pass is almost mandatory for the weekly competition if you want to take any breaks at all, but overall nobody can win this competition without clicking, a lot.
It is also one of the few measurements of activity in general, since champs give such a huge boost to your armies in general, and the idea that big coiners will still have to click a lot to make good use of their bought stuff kind of makes me smile . ;)
