Well you have to do all BG from level 1-100.
You can do that in 1 day, if you keep killing your highest BG which will give you a quest BG(next highest BG). and kill it, and get a quest, and continue so until you kill a level 100 BG. then you will receive a total of 24 quests.
and according to these source you will need 4 586 740 in offense/ defense to complete those quests. and according to DJ moody you will receive over 3 million in offense bonus after completing those quests.
but if you where to do them using rewards you will need less than 1 million in offense or defense. and use those reward you receive from saga complete the next quests.
The real trick is getting to level 100 BG.

to answer your question I used occult units - you still gain a profit - activate all possible bonuses (ie: 20%, Hero, Dragon Stone etc)
if you are using archers and pikes yes it will take a very long time
