Generally, when there is maintenance there will be a pop up to tell us.

Then we can make sure not to use XP potions, and to get any moving troops home before we are locked out.

Well, I am using my champ XP potion because we are in a champ event...

Then the server went down.  

It came back and my XP timer had ticked away.

Can you get me the potion back please?
