Grain production

I am new to the game. My farms seem to have stopped producing grain - can someone please tell me why?

Your troops have a stat called "Grain Consumption" which subtracts from your grain production. If you have too many soldiers, then they'll eat most of your production.

... And they don't have stopped producing.

Please hover your mouse on the grain counter in the top left corner and check what's written there :

- First red figure = your total grain balance = your farms productions minus your troops consumption

- Second red figure = your troops consumption

Your farm are still producing grain, but your troops are eating it as it comes. When the consumption is higher than the production, then the balance becomes negative and your total grain stocks go counting back to 0 !

How do the upgrade sketches work? It says they can increase the production or storage but I don't know how?

You should upgrade your buildings as usual, just make sure that you have enough sketches.

They work like the other kind of resources needed to upgrade any building. Past level 20, you still need timber, bronze and grain to upgrade to level 21 and beyond, but you also need sketches in addtiion.

Now I wouldn't necessarily spend there at first sight. There are much better ways to solve your problems (until you have 100,000 units or more, which isn't probably the case already, or you would be much more experienced and wouldn't even ask the question).

The best way to solve your problem is to allow tour troops to eat less, rather than trying to produce more grain.

If you're really low in level, then your first move will be to invest as many scrolls of wisdom as you can in the academy.

Just after you've upgraded "Sparta Promachos speed" and before "Course of Study VI", you'll be able to reach new features to the right side of the tree.

The second one reads "Grain consumption" : invest as much as you can there. You can get up to 8% decrease at level 80.

Then the very best way, reducing your consumption up to 89% (that can add up to the previous one to decrease your consumption by up to 97%, so all your troop would eat only 3% of their base value), is to build the temple of Demeter as fast as you can.

You main goal will be to sign all agreements starting from Chalcis. Then follow with Samos, then Alexandria (even if you don't plan on building the lightouse now), and finally Elusis, that will allow you to build the temple.

Once you've built and upgraded the temple, you'll never be lacking grain again until your whole army is worth 70 millions of combat points or so... So you'll have time to go on upgrading your farms past level 20 if you really need it done.

But honestly, by the time you'll get there, you'll rely on raiding to get grain. As long as it stays in your granary for long enough te be used before disappearing, it will be fine. ^^
