Gem Mine. If your Kael can solo Mino 15, he will be the source for getting masteries on all other champ. Other than that, leave them until your max energy gets to 130. After that, you'll mostly use them for extra energy when you're trying to complete something.
I have the gem mine level 3 already. I'm pretty sure I can only do Stage 12 at this point .
Gem mine if you plan on playing 6+ months. Not shards. Masteries for uugo would be a good investment too. Don't want to waste energy in mino until you can do level 15.
Why not shards btw? For 900 gems I can get 11 Ancients. 6 pack of Ancients cost $49.99 and 15 is $99.99.
I'm also only Day 24 playing so far, and dont have a lot of great champs. I do currently have Kael 60, Warmaiden 50, Uugo 50, Soulbond Bowyer 50, Kurzad Deepheart 50, Apothecary 40, Spirithost 40, Diabolist 40, Gorgorab 40, Siegehulk 40, and a couple others...
I did few mistakes on that buying shard with gems . (70 days in on reset in few hours)
You dont want to do that , since energy will give you way more value and progress ! And trust me blue shards are rarely pulling you something worthy :P
Did you buy all the market slots ? Ive gotten over 10 shard in 2months+ from there , 20-30 from random dungeons and clan boss , etc . So there is little to no point in buying them with gems !
Edit : You also have pretty good start up , just keep getting 60 for now , ask forums or follow guides on which one to do next and focus on that , will take you way further than a handful of rares that may or probably wont be useful much !

Uugo, gorgorab, and apothecary are worth 6stars. So you have undeveloped champs already. Most people waste gems/money on shards then cry they don't have any books or more importantly enough decent gear to properly equip.
Lack of champs is generally the least concern for an account. But chasing butterflies and opening shards is fun :)
I didn't use a legendary champ for 6 months, using rares and epics is best way to play early on. Now having a gem reserve to buy shards to finish off a fusion event or 150 guaranteed champ, that makes sense to me.

So should I invest more into Masteries or is it better to just spam gems on buying energy?

I'm with Trips here. Investing in masteries - even past your starter - is a much better option than shards. Getting your core team set up properly will help you progress so much faster, generally speaking.
I'd also hold off on using gems for energy refills until you are maxed out at the 130 energy cap.

Is say not 130 but at least over 100 . i just reached 130 energy few days back and at 70 days played , i had to use gem for energy a few times to keep up , but under 100 , id also wait if i were to start again ! :P

Hmm, there are definitely cases - perhaps making sure you get a fusion like Helicath that is fundamentally going to change the way your account looks - where it can be OK. The more F2P you are, I think the more mindful you have to be of stretching your resources as far as they can go, including your gems.

think outside few mistakes of my own , thats where the most of my gems went and was totally worth it to have hoarded them . Helicath been a blessing to my champ teams !
Also ftp.
I tend to use my gems for masteries and energy, it can be a real help to have extra energy for fusions, but sometimes you pull an amazing champ and do not want to do minotaur
Having said that, i am going to disagree with everyone a bit here.
I have in the past used gems to buy shards. Is it optimal? probably not. However this is a game about gambling and grinding, with a good chunk of the fun being the buzz from pulling shards. So i dont think there is anything wrong with using them this way occasionally.
I think with these type of games it is easy to sometimes focus too much on min maxing everything. Just be aware that if blowing gems on shards you may find fusions harder.

You need eenrgy to get gear and level champs. Gear will get you to NM/UNM clanboss where you get shards.
For instance since the last ancient 2x I have amassed 46 ancient shards and since the last void 2x more than 20 voids.
I'm also going to suggest that if you are an active player, the Sparring Pit has enormous value over the long-term. A fully-upgraded Sparring Pit gives 4300 XP / hour to 4* champs, and you can run five of those, for a total of 21500 XP / hour. In comparison, Brutal 12-3, which is what most people farm for XP, gives 34608 XP total (with X2 XP), divided four-ways, but only three of which go to champs that need it, so you get a total of 25956 XP, and costing 8 energy, AKA giving 3244.5 XP / energy. You get one energy per three minutes, so in an hour you get 20 energy. That means the sparring pit is giving you the equivalent of about 16 energy per hour, or, in other words, almost doubling the amount of energy you get per hour.
Of course, this is entirely dependent upon one thing - that you're active enough to log in to level up those champs in the pit. If you aren't, then the value of the pit drops precipitously.
I wouldn't necessarily level the pit to max immediately, but I'd at very least unlock all five slots ASAP.
