He's probably thinking of the alert you get every day saying "invite friends to get rewards".
Sadly, there is no way to get rid of that. The red dot will be there every day, even if you look at it, it'll just come back the next day.
Fortunately, it's just an annoyance. It doesn't prevent your progress missions.

No, there is a mission "Get a Referral Link." That doesnt mean you have to refer a friend, you just click the button that says "Get a Referral Link" on the Referral Link popup, and it should work.
